  • Cold Winter's morning (no snow)

I was up and about early this morning - taking advantage I thought of the brightness. It was a hour or so before the mist over the canal lifted and one could take a snap or two.

I think in every picture you will note the rising dampness which I hope adds to the images.

Although dressed well I returned home earlier than planned - my ears were suffering from the cold. The canal path I use is hidden from the sun until late afternoon.

Good set of pictures you have there Barrie. I particularly like the second and the third. You still have quite a bit of Autumn colour left.

Hi Barr1e, you seem to have a good walking.
Here are some what I felt and also a question.

Tree Reflection: perfect reflection. almost no wind. It conveys the atomospher of the morning. How calm --- except for the temperature, I mean.

Cyclists: The goose do not seem to watch out for the cyclists. A peaceful moment. I assume that those goose are wild ones and not being tamed.

Frosty Lock: a question. I can not find a motor or an engine for opening/closing the water gate. Is it done manually? If so it must be a lot of work. Maybe too much for a single person?

Steamy Lock: The dampness means how cold the air is, as I understand it. The water is warmer than the air. So yes you had a walk in a piercing cold morning. I hope you take a good care of your ears.

Really lovely set Barrie - you can almost feel the cold (mind you, having just been outside, the wind's going straight through today)!

An excellent set, but I particularly liked the moorhen and the abstract reflections above the bird; the third for the general autumnal feel and the last for the overall ethereal quality although that's slightly marred by the muddy foreground, but that can't be helped!

You captured the early morning atmosphere well Barr1e.
I particularly like the one with the cyclist, The composition ensures the eyes miss nothing.

              Yoshi, Caz, Pops and John.

Thanks for the comments. It's pleasing to know the walk was worthwhile, apart from the burnt ears. I was so engrossed with the happenings on my trek I forgot my coat had a concealed hood. The wine at lunchtime helped though.

John, Anne and I are often stopped by folk telling us what we have just missed.

Yoshi, most of the locks are opened and closed by hand, there are a few that are motorised.
Mathew Corbett (his father made Sooty and Sweep - (hand puppets) hosehold names some years ago) made a mini series on the locks in the north of the country. If you YouTube Mathew Corbett + locks you will get one similar to this. A good ten minutes spent I feel.
