  • Club entries

I haven't shown much lately, and I just thought I could put my last club entries in to show you.

The Green Monkey was from the previous competition and the other 2 are current.

    A green monkey in Barbados.

    Washed Up.

Same beach as below. I like to go down for a swim about 8.30 am and photograph stuff coming in from the sea.

Staying with friends in June, I noticed, from their balcony, the sun on the little inlet of water. People stay on the beach very late in Majorca, sometimes all night and you can watch them getting up in the morning. Usually young people.

    'til the sun goes down

All three, are very good photos, Audrey

I particularly like the leaf in the sea / sand

The beach shot. I recognise that as being the beach at, Calor Mayor, in the south of Majorca.

Fancy that. You are right and aren't we lucky, our friends apartment overlooks this beach. They have lived there for about 25 years and it is so handy for swimming.

      Thanks for your comments.

Hi Audrey - I love the first two I think that they are great pictures, However I am afraid that the beach scene is far too 'busy' and does not really make a good picture. Sorry !!

I know it is really, I just liked the fact that people stayed there for as long as they could as the sun was dropping and the deckchairs stacked for another day. Not really a competition entry" Even the people are facing the wrong way on the right hand side.

I like the leaf shot and can imagine the movement of those gentle ripples around it

Like some of the other contributors I am not keen on the beach scene. However, the reflections in the water in the foreground are great - there must be a picture there. The other two are good, particularly the leaf. What did the judge(s) think of them? - K.

The green monkey - he said I should have cloned out the banana skin! I had thought about it, but as I had just seen the monkey eat the banana, I decided to leave it. Oh and I got the lowest mark I have ever had 10 out of 20, but you should have seen some of the others. The photography lecturer at our local college is last.

His marking was bizarre and in my 12 years of membership I have never seen such low marks.

The other two will be judged on Wednesday.

                  Re: Club entries

That is the secret way of judges. Last year at my club I had very good marks for a particular shot, and the club selection committee decided to put it forward to represent them in an interclub competition where it got the lowest mark of the night! Never mind I will astound the next judge with my odd output!

                  - K.

By the way I have decided to produce a print of this shot for club entry. That should get the judge going. Any ideas for improvement before I print and mount it, anyone? - K.

                      An interesting collection Kurt.

I would crop some off both sides or darken this area. Also darken the area between the two pictures where we can see the window and catches.

This is not well done because it all needs to be darkened in the middle and it is not tidy, but it gives you the idea of what I mean.

Thanks Audrey, I have played with the small version to try out your suggestions. I will work on the larger image a bit more carefully. Any further comments by you or anyone else welcomed.

I have not yet decided on a title, either so suggestions for that are welcome too. Something like "Preparing for my Masterpiece" or "Imitation is a Sincere form of Flattery" are my initial ideas. - K.

                            Re: Club entries

                            Judges are, thankfully, all different

With any "Natural History" images we are looking for TEA:

Taxonomy, Environment & Action/Activity. The days of a bird on a stick are long gone and we want to see the creatures depicted in the way Paul Hobson presents them

But as so few of us come close to this standard, getting two out of three part of TEA is an achievement.

I might have been inclined to flip the leaf onto the leading diagonal, but that again is so often seen that a judge may find that boring and reward the alternative view as you have shown.

As for the Art image in the later posts, we are very often told by judges that you have to put your own "spin" on representing "other peoples art". You have certianly done that, and I like it.

Much like this forum, clubs are a great place to show and get feedback on your work, and if someone else likes it, that's a bonus.

A few weeks back I received my most "interesting" comment from a judge, when he stood looking at it and then said "Why"
