This was grabbed while on a short pleasure ride on a canal in Suzhou, China, on an excursion from Shanghai. It's about the size of a large sea gull and was flying circuits over the canal. The beak is what made me realise it wasn't a gull.
Immature Night Heron/Bittern species but I'm not sure what species they get in China.
Checking online it looks like an immature Black-crowned Night Heron.
