  • Out on the canal towpath with the Nikon V1

All taken at 110mm (roughly 300mm in full frame terms) @f/5.6. The colours are rather muted as the are photographed was in a shaded area.

Some modest cropping and tweaking in Lightroom 3.5 has been applied to in-camera JPEGs (no LR support for Nikon 1 NEFs yet).

    Hi Ian,

What did you think of the EVF? That would probably be a deal breaker for some potential buyers if it is not too good.
If the raws actually do compare well with a good dslr and the EVF is good it could tempt me as being a very good camera for street photography. Small, light, less obvious than a dslr, and surely quieter. Of course it would have some advantages for wild life fans too - with the F adaptor my 55/200 would shoot up to 540mm!
Have to wait and see what the lab test reports are like.

The EVF is very good. Not quite as good as the Sony OLED one on the NEX and Alpha A-77 SLT, but as good as the similar spec, ones used by the Micro Four Thirds Panasonic and Olympus Pens, and much better than any bridge cameras.

I had problems with blown highlights on one JPEG shot in Lightroom and so I had a go at fixing it using the RAW file in View NX2 and there was definitely extra latitude for recovering the highlights.

DxOMark tests indicate that the sensor is about the same level of quality as the Micro Four Thirds brigade, but a bit below APS-C in the Sony NEX.

Out of interest, if the Nikon 1 interests you now, has Micro Four Thirds, Sony NEX or Samsung NX not interested you also? Is it a brand thing?

There is a brand preference Ian, I have had a Nikon since I bought my first one, a Nilkkorex, in Penang in 1964. I have had other brands but always alongside a Nikon slr or dslr but my present pocket camera is a Canon S95.
I have handled most of the MFT in the shops, some are too small and, to me, some just don't feel right, especially the Sony NEX variety.
I have never had trouble using a dslr in the street and for candids but I do find that people are much more ready to turn away or scowl when you point a big black dslr at them now. The F mount of course would mean that with my present Nikkor lenses I would have cover from about 30mm to 540mm without an extender.

I guess it's always difficult to tell looking at web images but these certainly look OK, perhaps as you say a little flat and lacking contrast but decent enough.
