Unfortunately, the heron was over the other side of the canal and some 150/200 metres further on, otherwise I might have been able to take much closer images.
I watched and took many pix over half an hour today of the heron. Fish was off the menu. The first catch is a mouse as seen below, followed by a small rat I think. Its third snack Anne and I think was a toad.

Rather than 'bump' my Graham it's here thread thanks to all who commented and looked in.

That's interesting, I've only ever watched them catching fish, didn't know they ate land based creatures as well.

      I didn't know that either.

Great capture, Barrie. Ok it's in the distance but you've still captured enough detail to see what was going on.

        Thanks Graham and Pol.

I hope this one didn't get furred up.

          That's incredible!! Poor little bunny!

We have a small pond in the front garden and there used to be goldfish in there but a heron took them. The pond still has plenty toads, newts and frogs though I don't know if any are taken by anything other than wandering cats. We only ever spotted the heron once. It landed on the edge, grabbed a fish then cleared off quickly.

A good sequence and clear enough to see what is happening.
I was aware that they ate small rodents but the bunny was a shock.
Hardly seems possible to get a whole rabbit down its slender neck.
