  • Some eyes are amazing

A visit to St. Albans butterfly sanctuary yesterday resulted in some happy photographers. We had hoped to take some shots of the butterfly gardens outside and the grounds in general. Unfortunately, a cloud burst and heavy rains put a stop to that. We were however delighted to take pictures of the tropical butterflies they breed and show in the Tropical Butterfly House.

Here are just a few - I was amazed at the size of some of them.

Leaf butterfly, super colours when the wings are open

    Owl Butterfly, particularly large.

    Swallowtail

Tiger Longwing I fell in love with this one.

Another visit is a must as we wish to capture the butterflies out in the wild, I'm sure the large gardens here must attract many species.

The rain yesterday was inconvenient but welcome, I'm sure you will agree

I have heard of the butterfly sanctuary but not visited so will have to put that on my to-do list!

Hi Barrie, I visited that farm last year with my sister who was visiting from Australia. It is certainly amazing and well worth a visit, although I would advis avoiding the school holidays if possible. Here are one or two that I took with the Lumix G1:-

This one settled on my sister's hat. !!

These last two were taken with the butterflies perched on some overripe bananas.

        Hi Dennis -

Pleased you and your sister enjoyed the visit. Nice shots - the owl butterflies certainly like feasting on fruit.

I agree Ian the rain here is most welcome - unfortunately it means the lawn (patch) will need cutting.

        Thanks both.
