My grandmother had a mangle for squeezing out excess water from the laundry. Not sure her iron was like that though.
Back when I was a teenager in the early 1970s, they still didn't have electricity in my Mum's home towm in the Philippines, so they used what I think are called storm lamps which worked off pressurised spirit. At least that was when candles wouldn't suffice!

Life took on a whole new meaning for her when she got her first washing machine in the 50s. It had an 'agitator' on the top for agitating the clothes inside - the agitator was operated manually.
My grandmother had one of those heavy irons, like Pops has shown. She used to heat it over the open fire (on a special stand) then it was pressed on the heavy cotton sheets. It was used as a door stop by the time I was old enough to ask "why does your doorstop look like an iron?" - so she explained it all to me gave me a quick demonstration.
