  • Are you old enough

to remember the old fashioned way....
this one belonged to my late mother and I just can't throw it out. Its condition is down to it having been stored in the shed for years.

My grandmother had a mangle for squeezing out excess water from the laundry. Not sure her iron was like that though.

Back when I was a teenager in the early 1970s, they still didn't have electricity in my Mum's home towm in the Philippines, so they used what I think are called storm lamps which worked off pressurised spirit. At least that was when candles wouldn't suffice!

I remember my My mother having a mangle. She also had a special boiler and a 'Poss tub' with a wooden contraption for beating the clothes in the tub.

Life took on a whole new meaning for her when she got her first washing machine in the 50s. It had an 'agitator' on the top for agitating the clothes inside - the agitator was operated manually.

My grandmother had one of those heavy irons, like Pops has shown. She used to heat it over the open fire (on a special stand) then it was pressed on the heavy cotton sheets. It was used as a door stop by the time I was old enough to ask "why does your doorstop look like an iron?" - so she explained it all to me gave me a quick demonstration.

I can remember the mangle very well.
I used to think it was fun when I was allowed to turn the handle.
