    Quite pleased with this.

But not totally. Doesn't have quite the impact that I was hoping for.

Any advice ? I realise that the setting wasnt ideal, but my focus is on the fly, and not the background.

Mmm - I would have been pretty happy with that.

I hope you don't mind but I have played with it using levels adjustment and a little more lighting. I'm sure others who have mastered the post processing side of the art could do wonders with it. Don't forget Jim's weekly close up thread.

I agree with Barrie in that I'd have been pleased with that too. If I do eventually manage to get into position the fly always clears off before I manage to click the shutter!

What more were you trying to achieve? What sort of extra impact were you after?

How about maybe aiming to capture a fly face on - concentrating fully on just the head, facial features, mouth etc to fill the frame? Is that the sort of thing you're after ... not that I can be much help about achieving that sort of shot.

Cue Jim - come in from Denver please.

Thanks Barrie. Your efforts have improved this shot.

        Hi Pol

Thanks for the reply. I think that the problem is my lack of processing skills. I think!

But the photo looks drab, to me. It doesnt Pop, to coin a past phrase of Ash's.

When I see photos like this in other places. I look and think WOW!

This doesnt do this for me. Maybe I am looking for too much!

I've never thought you lacked processing skills! Sometimes maybe I'd thought you could've improved thigs with a quick auto correct of the histogram but, other than that, almost everything I've ever seen from you (here or elsewhere) has been super, enviable.

I can thoroughly recommend lynda.com for whatever sofware you're using. There are top-notch video tutorials for loads of software proggies in there. It's a subscription website, not especially cheap either, but there are usually plenty free tutorials for non-subscribers, especially if you're not using the very latest version of the software.

I must've spent hours of my life in lynda.com - never yet had to subscribe to get to see what I wanted as I always take advantage of the free months subscriptions when I've upgraded PS.

Barr1e has taken the image in the direction I would have, but fundamentally it's a super image - much better than any of the insect macros I have tried so far

As a matter of fact I was looking into lynda las night after I'd posted here.

I see there's a promotion there atm for 7 days free trial. I'd suggest looking into what's available free of charge for your own image editing software - then take advantage of the 7 day free trial for anything you can't look at unless you're subscribed.

One other point ... one of the other nice rthings about lynda.com is that you can subrcribe for just one month if you wish. That also makes it more affordable.

My thoughts are the fly is super, very sharp & detailed, good pose.
Straight out of a horror movie

It simply lacks suroundings, not much could be done about that, you get what there is in these cases.

You can't pick your own background with insects Garry and I would have been chuffed to have made this capture.
A head on shot would have captured both eyes but I haven't yet come across an insect that will wait patiently while I adopt another position
