  • Spooky infra red!

Here is a sneak-preview of my forthcoming article introducing infra red photography:

Taken with our infra red converted Olympus Pen E-PL1 (processed in LR and PS CS4 to mono). Notice that my sunglasses have become completely transparent - even the dark plastic of the frames.

And here is the normal visible spectrum view taken with an unmodified Pen E-PL2.

Strange how it alters your glasses but has no effect on the darkened windows on the right

The windows are not darkened, but in shadow. They are already transparent in both visible and IR. My sunglasses are opaque in visible light and transparent in IR

Ian, would you get the same transparent effect if you photographed a car with tinted windows, would you be able to see the occupants?

I suspect not, because the interior of a car is usually in shade. But if you used an IR flash, then yes, probably. On the other hand, some cars now have windscreens that are coated to be IR opaque (I believe to keep the car cooler in bright sunshine) so that could be a problem.
