Re: First macro fly (warning - big image!)

Fancy picking a dead one!

Now try it with a live one!
Doesn't look to be the best combination of lens and tube, choice to me, albeit, I realise that this is your first attempt at serious macro.
Well tried.Canon 7D 50D 400D Canon 300mm f4 L IS Canon 70 - 200 f2.8 L IS Sigma 150 - 500 f6.3 OS Sigma 50mm f1.4

Well tried.
Well, I saw it there on the floor and the opportunist side of me kicked in!
It really was a very small one probably only 6-7mm long, about a third of the size of a typical fly. The fly was only about 2 inches at most from the end of the lens.
But if I can find something larger, I think the image quality will be better.
Of course the 50 f/1.4 is not a macro lens and some close focus aberrations are uncorrected, but it's fun getting in that close

I'm not that sure to be honest - but probably f/16 as dof was very limited. This guy was only 6-7mm long.Originally posted by Jimindenver View PostVery nice Ian. When I get new gear, I always try it on the dead things first.
Question, what was your aperture setting?
