Re: Filament Mushroom Cloud
Superb! You've excelled yourself there, Ash. I think I'll nip over to the gallery and nominate that one for POTD.

BTW - you probably won't agree but the copyright along the bottom spoils the picci and it's probably not much use anyway as it can be cropped off very easily by anyone who wants to nick the pic. So - you might as well have done a smaller one in a more discreet place, ideally in red.

Re: Filament Mushroom Cloud
Great idea - I don't remember seeing anyone else doing that so well done! What made you think of this idea?

Re: Filament Mushroom Cloud
My Father said he once did it years ago and challenged me to give it a go
I think I will print him one off for his wall as he never had any to show me.
If you google burning filament there are some excellent shots.
Garry asked the question how many bulbs did I get through, well the answer is as many as I could find
Not because it took many attempts but because each time you do it you get a different smoke and cloud effect and I was having alot of fun while doing it.
As long as you manually pre focus and make sure your firing that shutter BEFORE you turn on the power, you will get a keeper of some description.
I would say you need at least 5 fps for this as within 2 seconds its all over.
glad you like.
Ash.

Re: Filament Mushroom Cloud
Hi Ash
Thanks for the reply!
I'd like to try this myself.
One more silly question! How did you break the bulbs, without breaking the filament?
Or are the filaments that strong?Canon 7D 50D 400D Canon 300mm f4 L IS Canon 70 - 200 f2.8 L IS Sigma 150 - 500 f6.3 OS Sigma 50mm f1.4

Re: Filament Mushroom Cloud
No probs Garry, I tried a hammer but the filament is so delicate you end up breaking it.
You need a pair of those adjustable pipe grips plumbers use and put em round the kneck of the bulb just after the tin bit and sqeeze
, stick the bulb in a bag before you break it and you wont get glass all over.
good luck, can't wait to see your shots.
Ash.

Re: Filament Mushroom Cloud
great shots ash! of the 2, i prefer the portrait version, simply because it fills the frame more.
this is something i've been meaning to do for a number of years (bought a load of bulbs about 4 years ago especially for this), but as usual, never got around to doing it.

Another belter!
I dare bet it makes a classy desktop too. I'm sure your father would be thrilled with a print of either or both of those shots.
