  • A cormorant visits Hemel Hempstead

This afternoon as the (rare but welcome!) winter sun was well on its way to setting, I was testing the new m.Zuiko 75-300 f/4.8-6.7 (150-600 equivalent) on an Olympus Pen E-PL1 at Apsley Lock near our office when I was rather pleasantly surprised by the appearance of a large cormorant sunning itself on the top of the roof of a three storey building overlooking the 'marina' where canal boats park up. The above view is taken with the lens at 75mm.

Here is a cropped view using the lens at 300mm (600mm equivalent). All the shots are hand held.

Are cormorants that unusual to see so far inland? Over to you bird experts!

I think they do live inland - I saw quite a few when I visited Tours last year (ok, I know it's the wrong country, but it's definitely inland.

Good captures, the eye is particularly sharp (and I never knew they had blue eyes!)
