  • convention group photo

i recently did a group shot of 125 people. they were on a stair case and was on top of a step ladder on a catwalk looking down on them (needless to say the camera was hand held). the lighting was a bank of Elinchroms giving me f/9 @ iso 200. i used two cameras for insurance.
    a. Hasselblad H3DII-39 with a 50mm lens. (39 mp)
    b. Canon 5DII with the 16-35mm f/2.8L II.
the client wanted an 10x8 for each person in the photo. i let the client pick and she chose a Canon image.
that speaks very highly for Canon.

Impressive shot John. You seemed to be in an extraordinary high position. I've done a few similar shots, though I was outside. I always find though that there is at least one person who refuses to look at the camera, and I see you have one too. The old boy second from the left on the front row

cropped out of the bottom of the frame is a wide wood ledge. if not for it i could have decreased my angle. looking down on someone is never flattering. since i'm in the expression business i told them that at my angle "nobody will have a double chin". and you are quite right about the one person with the short attention span, never fails.

I wonder what the chap was reflecting on - perhaps no bonus this year.

I don't need to tell you it's a great shot.

the way it usually plays out when doing corporate group shots:

you are given a time and place
subjects are most often in a long meeting while you set up
the doors open and they are sent in your direction for a photo
there mixed emotions between the photograph, the bar and the restroom

i work for this company often and they are the best for a group shot,
other organizations can be like herding cats.

Spot on John, this is exactly how it is. In the past I have had to interject as the meeting ended and politely but firmly tell them what I wanted, where to go etc before they did anything else There are times when you have to bully them a little in order to get what you want. But there is always someone who wil not look at the camera, not to mention Blinkers, which is why I always take loads before I let them go.
