  • Superb Fairy Wren

My photos of the Fairy wren are included here purely to illustrate a story & not for their quality or critique!
I had heard that some birds use brightly coloured bits & pieces to aid their displaying to females of their species but had never seen it personally before until now! This little chap's plumage is so beautiful anyhow! What the camera was not able to capture was the iridescence of his blue plumage! Anyhow, I initially saw a male wren displaying a bright yellow petal to a female he had been constantly flitting after! However, a couple of days later when I had my camera in hand, I saw a male once again display in the same fashion with a bright red petal & was able to capture the image! This I will add in the next post as currently unable to include in this one!

These little birds move about incredibly quickly & hardly sit still for more than a couple of seconds, which makes taking photos of them very difficult! They constantly flit about!

A very pretty little bird that you managed to capture. Our wren is not nearly as colourful
but just as difficult to photograph. I have not managed it yet. thanks for posting regards JohnR.

Some more new knowledge - thanks.

Pretty thing and I'm pleased you have shown it.

I managed to capture one of ours last year singing whilst standing on a dock leaf.

These Fairy Wrens - do they live as far apart as the UK and Australia?

I didn't know you got Fairy wrens in the UK! Do you get the Superb/Splendid or Blue wren there? This particular species from King Island are apparently a different to those found on the mainland, being a darker blue colour & slightly larger! According to info, they aren't a true wren & are more a subspecies! Does the UK also have Fairy Penguins like us here in Australia/New Zealand?

Ah, actually I have re-read Barr1e's post and I now think he refers to a native wren, not the one you photographed. I'd certainly be on the look out for such pretty colours!

Looks like he/she is celebrating dinner (just below in front)

                    Nice capture!

What a lovely photo Barrie! Excellent capture! Yes....it looks like it's calling mate or others to come dine! The males of the Superb fairy wren only have such bright plumage during the breeding season which is from September to March, otherwise both sexes are brown!

What a beautiful bird and story Jocelyn. The plumage is absolutely superb! Just love the info on the display methods adopted by the males.
