  • Sweet 16

Ok so not the best in the world but about time I posted some photos on here again . The young ladies mum asked me to take a few photos of her daughters 16th birthday party which I was happy to do. Then a few weeks before the party she asked if I could do some photo booth type shots. So I set up a white sheet as a backdrop and used two flash units to light that and a flash in front with a soft box. The lighting in the area was really not very good so I asked for a few small wall light to be put on. Well that did not go down well with the DJ lol but I did say to him what time are you here till and he said about 11.30 so I said well I will be gone by 10 so you can have the lights off then and still have a good hour and a half with all your lights and disco going on then. Me being 6.1 and a big guy he seemed happy with that lol. The young lady whose birthday it was by the way is dressed in blue

OK last one Mother and daughter. Oh and the reason they are cropped like they are is because if you saw the full length you would see the tiled floor.

I thought I would add this one to show the sort of set up and space I had to work in. The light stand you can just see the bottom of on the right hand side was tight in the wall and the one on the left out of sight was about the same distance from the backdrop. I was standing only about 5 foot in front of the young ladies with a soft box to my left

With 12 and 14 year old girls, I can foresee the day when I'll possibly be doing something similar!

Have you ever visited a TV studio such as the news studio? you would be amazed how small they are. I recently visited the BBC studio's at the Mailbox in Birmingham, the Midlands Today studio area that the presenters use is only about half as big again as my living room, there is of course as much again for three TV cameras. On screen it looks very spacious, all down to the lenses used.
Also many years ago I visited the ATV studios in Birmingham, the Crossroads set (yep it shows you how long ago) and the check in desk was desperately small, could just about accommodate two people behind it, but on screen it looked very spacious. And the camera never lies

No Patrick sorry to say I have never been in a tv studio but would love to have a look around one. I know it is what you do with the space you have and I guess we would always want more . It was a fun evening and I would do it again no problem

Thanks Ian I guess you saw them going up on face book. I just took a bit of time getting them here

Yes I am sure your time will come around soon. Just make sure there is no twister mat around. Young ladies and short little dresses do not mix lol

I wasn't implying any criticism, your comments simply made me think how tight the space is for even the pro media, still more than you had at your disposal.
I have worked in my own living room with back drop and flash heads on tripods its very tight.

You know if the room is white both walls a ceiling a flash gun fitted to the camera and bounced into the right angle between wall and ceiling gives an amazingly pleasing light.
Another light suitable for head and shoulder that I have used is with my Sigma ring flash, very pleasant skin tones and the eyes light up with such a sparkle. Neither of these methods give any back lighting to hair or backdrop but you would find so much more space to work in.

Hi Patrick I did not take it as criticism and sorry if I came across as if I had . I do not have a ring flash but can see how that would work well. I have seen a fair few diy beauty dishes and I like the lighting they give but my diy are next to none One day I may give it a go
