    Not a traffic accident

This effect is caused when a spout travelling upwards collides with a water droplet travelling downwards. It lasts for a nano second.

    Yay - you did it!

All y'need now are the transparent coloured sheets and a few clean collisions (for the 'saucer or helmet' shaped tops).

Did you make a lot of mess getting them to collide or were you banished to the shed for the experiments so you could make as much mess as you wanted?

As if I would make a mess!

Set up in the computer room. The tray I used was inside a larger tray so no splashes. The reservoir was secured in a custom made box.
Have to do a bit more research and experimenting to achieve a helmet. Need more control over the drips.

Lucky you for having a dedicated space to do these things. Last time I tried anything along those lines I used a punctured polybag and the bag burst and spilled all over the table and floor.

The collision drip control is the real challenge. Those fellas in the video took ages working that one out iirc. It looks as though you're well on the way to cracking it though. I never tried it myself - never got that far after the burst polybag incident.

I suppose art suppliers might also have the sort of coloured sheets you could use for the colours. Maybe some sort of frame like the ones that come with a kid's Wendy House or tent with the papers held in place with clothes pegs or bulldog clips?

You can do it. Have a lorra fun trying anyway, eh.

I'm impressed! Particularly with the colours that appear in the drops. Never tried anything like this.

One system I'd considered, but never got around to trying, would be to use an IV line. The sort of line and flow or drip controller used for transfusions. You can buy them online from medical equipment suppliers and there are one or two of them supplying bits and pieces via Amazon Marketplace.

[ame="http://www.amazon.co.uk/Economed-Solutions-Giving-Set/dp/B002ZGS80G/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_2?ie=UTF8&m=A1OCTSQ566OEG1&qid=1287 513090&sr=1-2-fkmr0"]Here's one example[/ame] ... you'll probably be able to re-use the line several times as you're only using water.

Maybe attach it to a bag hung from some sort of homemade stand similar to a doube bird feeder hook - or even a coat hanger fixed firmly enough. Anything that'll hold the bag securely - then you can try using the flow controller to time the drips more accurately.

              Caz,

Have a look at 'liquid sculpture' HERE

And watch BOTH the tutorial videos HERE for help and suggestions about the techniques.

The get yerself started. It'll keep you busy until the Daffodils reappear.

Already using something similar. Got a drip valve and tubing from the aquatic section of the local garden centre. The drip rate can be controlled through the valve. Have also been using different coloured trays ...large plant container saucers are ideal but I only have the green and the brownish ones. Only took 50 today and got 2 collisions, flash batteries ran down and couldn't be bothered to go fetch more

Thanks caz. Its fun setting up and every shot gives a different result.

I think they used large transparent coloured cellulose type sheets in the video, though I haven't watched it properly for ages - not since I gave up on it (before we got flooded out).

I think I once saw another system where they'd used coloured paper propped up behind the water tray and directed the flash at the paper so that the reflection coloured the splash - but I forgot where I saw that one.

2 collisions out of 50 sounds ok. Better than none.

                      Pops,

                      This sort of thing
Something that would colour the splash by reflecting on the water. One for the 'saucer' and another colour for the column. Though you might need something larger.

The last session I did with droplets I took over the kitchen for a day and made a bit of a mess ok alot of a mess.
Your inspiring me to have another session, think Ill set up in the garage this time.

I avoid lots of mess by resting the tray I am using inside a larger one.
Always good to have a towel close by as well just in case any splashes find their way onto the flash.

Mmm good call, I think last time I used a plastic medicine syringe for the droplets, it was'nt bad for the control but a bit tight, what you using?
