  • Langstone Waterfront

I was asked to produce an image of Langstone waterfront for a header on a groups website. It took me about a week to get the right perspective and for the weather conditions to be just right with no wind. The image below is the result.

The image was accepted and also the local newspaper printed it. I have had a lot of great comments from newspaper readers and the group.

Langstone is on the edge of the channel leading from Langstone Harbour to Chichester harbour and cuts Hayling Island off from the mainland. I wanted to get good reflection on this tidal channel so very low/no wind was absolutely critical as was high tide.

The image below was taken a few days previously at low tide. It was taken to test the angle of the shoot for when the conditions were right. I think this too has a lot of interest in it. This was created from 3 portrait images, hand held and merged together to form a panorama.

    CC as always welcome.
    Kind regards

Thank you Garry. The timing had to be exactly at the high water point, either side of that, the tide itself will create too many ripples across the water. It is great when the planned moment arrives

Thanks for sharing with us - the comparison of the tide states is fascinating

          Thanks Ian
Langstone Harbour is about 90% mud at low tide but resembles a large lake at high tide. There used to be an ancient ford between Hayling Island and the mainland, at a point close to this photograph. This was cut through in the 18th century when the deep water canal was constructed to link Portsmouth, Langstone and Chichester Harbours.
The waterfront at Langstone was said to be a notorious place for smugglers. I might post a little on this later.
          Kind regards

What a difference a few days makes, as well of course as the water.

            Excellent images, both.

Thank you Caz. Although it took a long time till I got the conditions I wanted, I learnt a lot in the process. It is great when a plan comes together.
This contrasts greatly with my normal day-to-day photography, where an opportunity arises that cannot be predicted and quick planning has to take place to capture the moment.
              Kind regards

The pub is ideally placed and has a few bench seats outside. I thought I would give you a crop of this image. The person on the bench looks a bit worried that someone will spot him when he should have been walking the dog. I cannot see any glasses around him so he may be hiding his drink

This crop shows how much detail is in this image. The combined Pano file size was getting on for 70M.
                  Kind regards

The first shot was well worth your patience and planning

On a high spring tide in stormy coditions, the water level can breach the wall. All the houses and other buildings around here have flood protection boards at the doors. Look to the right of the sitting man. That door-way has the board in place.
