Tonight I've been watching 4 possums in our tree...eating the new buds!

    Nice -

I remember photographing some when we visited Melbourne in 2001.

      Must be wonderful to watch.

I am baffled at your extended shutter speed because you also used flash.
Perhaps someone can correct me but I thought that when using flash in darkness it is that which actually takes the shot and the shutter speed is really of no consequence.

Woops I feel this is going to be a long night, Ive had a really long stressfull day but hey it may aswell be more! Bring it on!
Im not altogether understanding you saying that the flash takes the shot and the shutter speed has no consequence.
Surely you have had tooooooo many beers
Your shutter speed is the prime objective of capturing a photographic image!
It does not matter wether its iluminated by natural or artificial light, your shutter speed will determine wether you capture the image or not!
Pops are you having a laugh or what?

Pops is right in what he says. Under dark conditions the flash can do all the work. Flashguns have a very fast flash duration, so long as you don't set the speed above the cameras flash sync speed, it does not matter what speed you use. So set the camera on 250th sec and the flash has done the job way before the shutter closes. When using studio flash it takes people a while to realise that aperture is much more important to exposure

Yes but not in darkness .... see Stephen's response

Had the shutter speed been set at say 1/200 and flash used the shot would have been the same

                Good afternoon Jocelyn

Lovely image. I even like the second possom peeping into the frame. The flash has caused an evil reflection in the eyes which makes the scene look sinster. I suppose that is your revenge for the loss of new buds.
                Kind regards

Yes pops I no what your saying but on your first post you gave the impression that if you were using flash you could totally ignore what shutter speed your using!
If you use a camera in manual mode you cannot just ignore the shutter speed just because you are using flash. I admit that there is a window where the shutter speed wont make much difference and obviously in auto the camera is going to set this for you.
                  A missunderstanding I feel.
