  • Mel indoor shoot

Well I guess we all hate to admit it but winter is on the way and the days are getting getting shorter . So I asked Mel to help me do a shoot indoors. This is a smaller space then I have used before and will take a bit of getting to grips with but it is free to use . I know some of you may not like the tat she has but it is her daughters name and to me a tat can say a lot about a person if done well. The same goes for the studs it just is part of the person in a way.

Nice series of photos. But my favorite would be the last one. The pose and expression really does it for me.

Thank you both for the replies. It seems that one is liked by a lot of people. I have done another edit on it which may well divide people but I like it and think it is not to over the top.

This second edit is much better IMO, Peter. You have softened the tones and textures on the face and for me it is therefore much more flattering. The picture is also the best of the batch for me

Thank you. It does seem to be going down well with the people that have seen it so far.

The new edit for me is the better.
I am a little concerned that you were shooting down onto your model on all the shots, perhaps on your next shoot you might like to try getting to the same level or even a touch lower, I believe this would give more flattering results.

                        Hi Patrick

yes I can see where you are coming from. I am 6.1 so most of the time I am always above someone which makes it harder also the room was small so it meant I was close to her which did not help. With the room being small and the fact I had not sorted out the flooring is the reason we have no sitting on the floor ones which would have help me with this problem.

I now also must make sure I do not rush my photos out and spend more time on doing the edits. Thank you for the comments and now I just need to get back out there and practice more

I have found if the model is standing, the photographer needs to bend the knees, you at 6.1 in particular.

I try and use a stool or something, at my age bending the knees can be more of a problem.
I agree with you about post processing give it more time not just you but us all, also quality not quantity. I for one would rather see just one or two very good shots rather than half a dozen shots with the two good ones mixed in. Yes I know its subjective and not a an absolute.
Vic Blackman from AP in the 50's-60's used to say a photographer gets his/her good reputation by showing their best work only. Makes sense to me.

                            Re: Mel indoor shoot

I'd very much agree with Patrick's comments. When I saw the first shot of this series it struck me immediately that you were looking down at her. The idea of using a stool is one I have used many times. If I have had to do portraits of staff I have even taken my own adjustable stool for the subjects to sit on If you are doing waist up/headnshoulder shots I much prefer the person to sit down as it alters the whole way they appear in the photo, shoulders are relaxed etc.

I'd also agree with Vic Blackman, its does make a lot of sense

                              Re: Mel indoor shoot

Again thank you guys for the feedback. This shooting from above is something I make sure I will take note of. I will say I do not always shoot from to low down as I hate the looking up peoples nostrils shots that you do see very often. The stool is a great tip as well.

As for the edit side of things I always do a small bit before I post them anywhere. Also most of these people are from face book and always want to see the photos as soon as. This is why I always post them up to quick. I will look in to slowing things down and getting the best edits I can from now on and if this means they will have to wait a few days so be it.

                              Thanks again

                              Peter
