Re: Portrait or landscape?
If I'm honest both challenge the brain and tell me there is something well out of plumb
However I can see in the distance that there are young saplings that are vertical and therefore I would guess that both photos are in fact level. In the light of this, I'd probably go for the Portrait version, definitely an odd effect though

Yes, I was on a trail above the bank of a dammed river in Mervent, France. The lie of the land is quite steep as it descends to the river.

Re: Portrait or landscape?
I prefer the portrait as that emphasizes the length of the trees and the landscape just doesn't seem to have anything to keep me looking. I would have liked to see more of the "vertical" trees in the background to keep me from wanting to "tip my head", but then I'm viewing on my I-touch and that point may be moot in full size. Just my thoughts, for what little they may be worth.

Sorry Ian, neither of them to anything for me and I really do think there is a slight tilt to the left.

Re: Portrait or landscape?
Portrait - if you want to be drawn into the walk along into the disrtance distance.
Landscape if you want to feel the angle of the slope more acutely.
But if they were my own holiday shots I'd want to print them both at 7x5. A location such as that would probably remind me of all sort of things that happened, or nearly happened, as well slipped and slid along the sloping path. And each photo has a subtle effect on the memory ... which is probably why you couldn't decide on portrait or landscape.

Re: Portrait or landscape?
I think there is some distortion visible from the use of the extreme wide-angle lens (very little in reality though - got to love that 7-14 haven't you Ian ?) and this disturbs me vaguely. I prefer the landscape version. The use of the portrait format is so common to emphasise the length and straightness of the trees that the landscape version appears fresher to me.

Re: Portrait or landscape?
Both make me feel as though I am sliding off to the left, more so in the first one. That said I prefer the portrait as it gives more depth, and if I'm honest looks like a local walk I occasionally take to a waterfall. It looks more like a path along a steep sided gorge in the first one. Lovely fresh greens, which I wouldn't expect at this time of year.
