  • Bingley Five Rise

Bingley in West Yorkshire is on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal. As the canal rises on its way over the Pennines it has to go through a series of 3 then 5 locks. This photo shows the Five Rise Locks

An interesting and very well taken shot.
    I like this very much.

My Kuso exif viewer (free download and just right click on the pic) gives me food for thought with the f value you used for future shots of mine.
What lens were you using please Stephen?

There is much in the image to enjoy - thanks.

Hi Barrie, I'm really glad you like the shot. I actually thought of you when I posted it as you have posted many canal side photos recently, and I know your local canal is a favourite haunt.

I use a similar Exif Viewer, its a plugin for Safari, there are also similar ones for Firefox. I'm surprised yours doesn't mention the lens. Its actually my new Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L. I actually bought it from Yalcrab on FTU and I must say I'm very pleased with it. As it also has IS built in, it also allows me to use slower speeds than I might do normally, I did some the other day at 1/15s hand held and they perfectly sharp.

        Thanks Stephen.

In fact the exif info contained which lens you had used, my excuse - I was tired and didn't have my goggles to hand.

          Hi

Love the lead in lines of the reflection on this one. I agree with what has been said here and your other thread " secret place", you have the knack of finding great locations and then taking interesting and engaging photographs.

          Best regards

Thanks Josh, here's another shot looking the other way from the top of the locks. You can see the Damart mill in the distance

              Hi

Prefer this one to the first especially the inclusion of the dark clouds at the top

It's amazing what detail can be brought out from a raw file in Lightroom Josh

I fully agree with that comment Stephen I also like both but prefer the first one just because I like the reflections in it.

Sorry I'm late - two great shots, but the first one gets my vote as I'm always a real sucker for reflection shots. Absolutely beautiful - and those locks look like hard work!

Thanks Caz, I certainly wouldn't be too keen on having to take a barge up them, there was actually one in the top lock whilst we were there. This is another shot taken from near the top. I particularly like the way it came out as I was struggling with the exposure on the original, however with a little selective adjustment on the sky and land its turned out well

Now that one I really like - you haven't posted the original, but I'd be interested to see what it was like before you made the adjustments. Whatever, the results are stunning.

Caz, I don't normally like to show the original, there is always someone who says they like it better or they don't like what I've done. For me the end result is all that matters and is what I want to show. However in this instance I will because its interesting to see the difference, and what I was working with. I exposed by -1/2 EV, hoping there would be enough info in the highlights. The histogram showed there were blown highlight, but I had little problem recovering them. The end result was achieved all in Lightroom 3 mainly by using the adjustment brush.

I think that it's sometimes a good exercise to post the original version of a given image, particularly when the results vary from the original so dramatically. For starters it demonstrates the sheer flexibility and lattitude available from RAW files, but also it shows those with less experience that what appears to be a fairly uninspiring shot with little shadow detail can be turned into something altogether more impressive.

                            Nice images, BTW
