  • My first wedding shoot...

Finally shot my first wedding on Friday - not sure yet whether I'd do another although I enjoyed it immensely and feel that I've learned a lot (about what not to do next time).

I did do a pre-wedding shoot in May and wanted another but, unfortunately, due to teaching commitments and ill health on both sides it didn't take place so it was in on at the deep end on Thursday to get some shots of the locations in the bag so that I'd have less to do on Friday and just in case the weather was worse!

I'm still editing - the bride has just entered the church.... so a long way to go yet.

I was asked to take a picture of her shoes (her "used) so I couldn't turn them round.

Whilst I was waiting to take the make-up/hair shots, I found this bridesmaid's bouquet in a shady place in the kitchen:

And this was taken just before the bridesmaids left:

Afraid I've bottled out from putting any of these in the critique thread!

Well. I think they are fantastic. A real documentary of part of the day. If the rest are like this one then you should be very proud.

    Best regards

    Josh
Ps. Would like to see what the first one looks like in black and White.

Thanks Josh , much appreciated. The feedback from the bride's family has also been very positive so far - they have a link to my flickr feed so can see them as they go up. The nicest thing they said to me is that, apart from the group shots, they didn't know I was there.

Not sure whether the shoes work in black and white, and I didn't want to post all mono images, but I've had a go:

Lovely stuff, particularly like the shot of the shoes quite different as is the Bride in preparation for the ceremony.

        Good one

If these are representative of the full shoot then, as a first shoot, you should be very, very pleased, as should the bride and her family. Obviously you have a lot of ability for this type of work.

No need to be shy. They're very nice shots. I can well imagine how pleased the bride and groom + families must be.

            Well done.

If these are an example I think you did very well indeed.
              I absolutely love the shoes

                How brave.

It is no wonder the family like them.

                Very nice.

I hope your health has improved.

Great stuff, b&w suits these well, are you making the album up yourself?
Its the little snapshots like these that fill in the album and make it all the more interesting for the viewer! Cant wait to see some more people shots.

                    Re: My first wedding shoot...

Thank you all for your kind comments, so much appreciated. I'm still wading through church and group shots and one thing I've learned is that next time I WILL use flash in the church, no matter how bright a reading I'm getting.

The bride's mother remarried last year and her new husband wants to produce the album himself on his mac so I'm not getting involved in album production.

My faves of today's editing session are:

That one involved a lot of lightening, dodging and burning and in particular trying to lift the colour of the dress out of the colour cast from the bright lighting in the church.

The next two are a mock ring-giving after signing the register - not sure whether to suggest the colour or the black and white?

Again great shots Caz, Flash in church I don't think so.
Always up the iso to accomodate the light available, you will always achieve a much more natural looking shot.
If your body is not that good at high iso performance there is always a software program that will tone down the grain for you, but sometimes grain is good, it adds texture and feel to an image especially in b&w.
From what you have posted so far you should be very proud of yourself and I would hire you for my wedding

The shot of the bride coming down the aisle is a beautiful shot. Have you tried adjusting the white balance to get rid of the colour cast? If you were to cool it slightly that should do the trick - maybe just enough to 'whiten' the dress.

Some Churches allow flash some don't, you have to ask. It is normally allowed during signing the register.
All this can be sorted with the minister/priest at the rehearsal or on the day before the wedding party arrive, for what can and can't be done.

Err, there is no indication that Caz used any flash, though I'd agree that its not usually a great idea to use it. Used properly though it can lift an otherwise dull shot

Hi Stephen, no Caz didn't use flash but in a earlier post she indicated she would definitely use it in future. In the days I did weddings I used some fill flash at reduced power for contrasty situations or conditions that had the background very much brighter than the subjects.
I would normally use a tripod in preference to flash particularly for those inside shots with low light.
