  • Las Cintas de Caballos

We have some friends here in Yunquera they are English and have owned a house in the village for about 7 years. Until this spring the house was used for holidays etc but they have moved here permanently. The move came about when their granddaughter (who lives with them) finished school at GCSe level in the UK. She has moved with them and will attend Spanish high school in September.

Sunday saw the first of the "big" fiestas of the year in Yunquera, Romeria de Porticate. One of the showpiece events of the feria is the Cintas de Caballos. Many of the young (and not so young) men of the village compete, at full gallop, on horseback to pluck coloured ribbons from a wire strung above their heads. With each round the wire is move progressively higher until all the ribbons have been collected. The winner is the one with most ribbons.

It is by no means common for each competitor to collect a ribbon, of the 30+ riders competing yesterday only 5 or six collected a ribbon and the winner only managed three.

Our friends granddaughter, Harriet, is an accomplished horsewoman, a polo player in the UK. Yesterday she competed in the the cintas for the first time, riding a borrowed horse that she hadn't seen until a couple of hours before the competition. I have never seen a female compete in the contest before and there were a number of shocked locals too, one being moved to comment that if Harriet gained a ribbon he was giving up.

Harriet obliged gaining one ribbon towards the end of the contest when the wire was at its highest. By doing so she finished 5th or 6th in the contest beating more than 20 local riders.

This series is of Harriet at the moment of "grabbing" the ribbon which is done by spearing a 2cm diameter plastic ring with a pencil like palita whilst riding at full gallop.

There is also video which can be seen at:

Wow - the video was excellent, but the shot of Harriet collecting the ribbon really shows what a feat it was.

Thanks for sharing - very interesting

Thanks guys - yes Ann did the video, she is fast becoming very adept at this moving picture stuff, something that eludes me. Caz, the pictures do not do it justice, quite how they manage it is beyond me and for Harriet to do it, on a strange horse, at ther first attempt was incredible. The girl can ride !

Lovely shots Bear, I suspect that Nikon really came into its own to capture the moment and the action

It is true Stephen, it did come in handy shooting 10 fps 14bit NEF's. The dust proofing was handy too. Bloody thing sounds like a mchine gun at full speed though. That big old mirror slapping up and down ! Thought it might frighten the horses for a minute.

Wonderful.............I love that sound. My Canon 1D is very similar, built like a tank, fires like a machine gun, though its only 8 frames a second People who have never experienced Pro cameras such as these simply do not appreciate their advantages, its not only the build quality but the ability to capture shots other cameras might miss.

                  Re: Las Cintas de Caballos

Stephen, ultimately, I think that is what you pay for when you spend all the money, that ability to capture shots that otherwise you might miss. I wrote about my experiences comparing my Olympus E3 with my D3s over on 4/3rds forum the other day. My conclusion is that for a lot of the time, maybe even most of the time, there is not a lot of difference bwetween the two. Where the difference comes is in the margins of performance and it is no all about IQ. I think that most mid-range DSLR's these days are capable of producing pro-quality images in mainstream conditions, but move out of the mainstream into marginal areas and they are not up to the job. High speed sports shooting, terrible weather conditions, ultra low light. These are marginal areas for most people and these are the areas where pro-spec equipment comes inot its own, to allow you to capture shots that you would otherwise miss. If you don't need this then it would be hard to justify spending the money.

I don't need the high speed shooting abilities of the Nikon but in this case it was nice to have and I got the sequence of Harriet collecting the "cinta" that I would probably have missed with my E3. I do need the ultra-low light capabilities and since the purchase, this has been a revelation. I do indeed get many, many shots I couldn't get before. money well spent !

It looks like a real fun competition and 3 sequential shots are brilliant
