  • Freddie and the tree stump...

Grandson Freddie helping granddad in the garden

First, by way of introduction and to admire the hair (still waiting for its first cut at the time)

Right son, go and pick that tree stump up for me...

It's too heavy granddad!....why is everyone lauging at me?

I know, I'll stand on it....

    Whoa, that's not easy either!

At this point I took the camera away from my eye to check he was OK and missed the "hitting the deck" shot

Mmmm, it's a bit complicated Pol...what's the old saying - you can chose your friends but you can't chose your family? Well, here's the exception that proves the rule!

'er indoors' sister's son (i.e. her nephew) disowned his AWOL mother and father and sort of reverse "adopted" us as his "mum & dad". Freddie is his son (Maisie, who's been on here a few times before, is Freddie's sister) they call 'er indoors and I nan and granddad. Maisie is old enough to understand and has rubber-stamped the arrangement. The nephew just wanted his kids to grow up with two sets of "grandparents". 'er indoors was happy to oblige so...families eh?

That means there's no blood-line between Freddie and Piers but they did meet at my Daughter's wedding back in April and got on famously :-)

That's really nice, you're ever so lucky. I remember Maisie well too.

They're a bonnie bunch of bairns - endearing little souls.

Actually Mike, that's a great name for a band!

Crisp shots courtesy of my Canon 100-400 mm hand-held using aperture priority at f5.6 to make the subject stand out (and to keep the shutter speed up on what was, IIRC, a dull day). Not an obvious lens for portrait work perhaps but I find it good for taking candids of the kids in the garden as I can keep my distance and they forget I'm there. I guess I was about 35' away when I took the stump shots.

It also means I can sit in my comfortable swing chair and cover most of the garden without having to get up

The 100-400mm has also been pressed into service for some wildlife shots around our pond using extension tubes to allow the minimum focus distance to be reduced but still keep your distance. Here's an example (which is also a significant crop, circa 2/3 of the original frame)....probably should have stopped down a bit more to get the eyes more in focus

I like to get my money's worth out of what is, for me at least, an expensive piece of kit...
