  • Stone Circle - Lake District

I was browsing a folder of photos taken in 2008 on a visit to Keswick in the Lakes, with Ian, Julia, Andrew Thatcher and Mal Smart. This stone circle again drew my attention, I just feel its position with the valley and hills in the background is just a stunning setting. The photo was processed directly from LR3 in the Topaz plugin. It has made an amazing difference to the detail making the scene almost 3 dimensional compared with the original. Let me know if you think its over the top.

This is good - I will have to have a look at my shots taken on the same day! Did you get rid of the iron posts and chain fence or are they to the left out of view?

You can just see one post on the extreme left. I decided not to bother removing it.

Hi Stephen, very nice picture indeed. I like the light and shadows at that time. As you said, it looks 3D.

Many thanks Horacio, to be honest though an 800px version does not do it justice.

            Similar but different!

PS I thought I had lost this batch of shots as the card experienced an error, but I was able to recover the RAW files in the end.

Re: Stone Circle - Lake District

Nice one Ian By comparison your photo is much "smoother" than mine, but then mine has been "enhanced" to get what you see.

As an aside, I have discovered that the recommended settings in Lightroom for the use of the Topaz adjust filter is to use Prophoto RGB. However when you export the resulting picture in sRGB the colours look flat and less saturated. The solution seems to be to use sRGB from the outset and the colours look ok and as intended. This shot is an example and has been processed via LR3 using Topaz adjust and then back into LR3 then exported, all in sRGB

Re: Stone Circle - Lake District

Re the stone circle ... the answer for me would be to have Stephen's sky on Ians foreground
Must comment on the last one.
While the content is full of interest I don't care for the finish at all. It seems to have crossed over the line between photograph and painting.

I think perhaps Stephen's photo with its beautiful textures creates more impact! Needless to say both pics are great! Your photo seems more surreal Ian! (A smoothed out version!)

Thanks for that Jocelyn - actually I wonder if you would have thought this without Stephen's version for reference?

You mean you don't see things with so much detail and colour Pops?
Truthfully though, I have to agree that some people are not keen on this sort of thing. You can't please all of the people, all of the time
