  • Flamenco in Yunquera

Flamenco is considered to be an art form of such cultural importance in Andalucia that its performance is subsidised by the regional government. Every town in Malaga province no matter what size has a social club or "Pena" where flamenco is performed, the artists paid by the regional government. Saturday night Laura Ramon and Luli Santiago came to Yunquera.

Great set Bear, you can almost hear the music and feel the emotion. I also like how in the shots of the guitarist you have managed to retain the atmosphere by not over compensating for the dark conditions. Would have appreciated some Exif data

Thank you. I really must get into the habit of retaining the exif. I would be happy to post the information if you like. The conditions were, in fact, not at all dark. The social club is lit like an operating theatre with overhead fluourescent strip lighting. The guitarist shots were under-exposed two stops.

Hi Kenton, I think these are the first pictures I have seen from your new Nikon that I feel have worked properly. I'm sure there is a steep learning curve when switching systems and it looks like you are beginning to feel at home with it at last

Ian, I agree with you completely. There is a steep learning curve and I admit I was not prepared for it. I expected it to be just remembering which buttons do what and where they are located but the camera system as a whole works in slightly different ways and produces slightly different results. All this has to be taken into account and it takes time to get used to it. Don't think I am there yet but i do think I am on the right track !

The facial expessions all give off the atmosphere of the occasion.
I particularly like the No5. It looks like she is just waiting for the right note before commencing.

Pops - you called it just right, this is moment just before the start of the performance where she is composing herself and preparing to perform. Flamenco can be quite draining for the singer who is judged on the emotional content of her performance. Laura was rightly, highly appreciated for her performance saturday.

Josh, thanks. Musicians are my favourite subject and what got me into photography more than 30 years ago.
