Gig photography...... call it what you will

These were taken last week at a Show of Hands concert in Leamington Spa. Very enjoyable concert, and I was lucky (for once) to be right at the very front.

This was taken at the beginning of the evening, when I was still getting my exposures sorted out, so it's not as sharp as I would like but I just like the motion of Phil Beer's bow:

    A pensive Steve Knightley:

Miranda Sykes - I liked the effect of the lighting behind her:

And finally, I made my way to the side of the stage - still using a 50mm lens, because I couldn't be bothered to change it

And finally, because with the 550d just because I can [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CHZ5tXKk6lU"]Show of Hands - Haul Away Joe - YouTube[/ame] a short snippet

Great pictures, but even better great use of a modern camera. Given the lighting levels and lack of professional microphones (assumption made) the quality of the video and sound are superb.

I guess this demonstrates the opportunity for creativity that a DSLR with video provides.

      best regards

Well guessed Josh - I haven't invested in an off camera mike yet, although they are available. This was taken at the 640 x 480 resolution - I have taken a couple of HD videos, but they're immense!

Considering I was standing at the very front of the audience, I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the sound. There again, they didn't have the amplification cranked up to unreasonable levels.

I took a couple of videos at the shoot I did last Thursday when my friend's band went into the recording studio to cut a demo disc, and the sound is nowhere near as good - probably due to the volume that was coming out of the studio speakers. The video they'd actually asked me to take I took without sound, as they're going to put one of their tracks over the top.

If anyone does look over at my flickr stream, they'll see that I take a fair few shots at gigs - not necessarily the big names, either.
