I like the copulating beetles in number 5 being spied on by a third.
Light thinks it travels faster than anything but it is wrong. No matter how fast light travels, it finds the darkness has always got there first, and is waiting for it. Terry Pratchett.

David - yes indeed I didn't see them at the time of taking the picture, only later.

Ash - D3s - perhaps you are right but then again don't all images start out straight from the camera ? and surely, if I was looking for a straight comparison, the only way to do it would be to take the same shot (or as near as possible) with both and compare.

I wasn't really looking for any comparision between cameras (surely, utterly pointless when I will only be using one of them) but looking to try and understand how what I did when using the Olympus would translate to using the Nikon. In this case I feel that taking pictures and processing them in a similar way is the starting point for the learning process.

Both cameras are excellent imaging tools, each with their own strengths and weaknesses, but it is operator influence I am trying to understand !

Thanks for commenting everyone, it helps !

Arr the d3s, an excellent camera if not the best pro tool at the moment, so are you a profesional where only the best will do or a keen amatuer with more money than sense?
please don't take offense but I no people that have spent thousands on camera's hoping to take better pics but in actual fact it had a reverse effect on their photography.
I will look forward to some pictures from the D3s!
        Ash.

Ash - you have to work harder than that to offend me - I have a thick skin ! I don't really fit into either of the caterfories you mention. I don't earn a living doing anything in particular although I do get paid for writing about and taking pictures of musicians. This career "enhancement" came about fairly recently and I was finding that my E3 was struggling in the kind of conditions I was experiencing. The real issue for me was low light, work. I have used all sorts of kit over the years and found the E3 to be an excellent tool within its limitations (aren't they all like this ?) it was just that in the last few months the limitations of the E3 are what came to define it for me so I had to make a choice. I am sure i will post many a shot from the D3s in the coming months !

            Hi,

I think you need to take the dog for a walk in the evening when the light is at the levels that you bought the camera to work in.

My age old, tried and tested, way of getting my camera setting as I want them is to use paint sample cards from B&Q and photograph them alongside things such as the plants you shot and then compare the final prints to the paint sample cards.

It's a lot cheaper than a Gretag chart and often you can get a strip of reds, Greens, yellows etc., to provide a close match to the colours that you are shooting.

In much the same way as I used to find certian films were to green for my taste, today we often see "casts" on prints, which while most of time are down to the printer and the inks, as we see more images digitally projected, the same effects are sometimes present.

Good to see that your composition is still spot on, I was expecting to see the horizons rising up the frame as you flag under the weight of you new toy

            Have Fun

I don't think a mere camera will make Bear flag after humping those sacks of olives around the mountain

What a bloody good idea. Aren't the simple ones always the best ? ideas I mean, of course ! All I need to do now is find a B&Q. I am waiting to try it out at a gig but have nothing scheduled for the next couple of weeks so thought I would play around, getting used to the buttons !

Cap'n Bill - at the moment it doesn't honstly feel that heavy. In comparison to an E3 + HLD4 + 12-60 combo, The D3s + 24-70 seems about 20% bigger all around. I suppose I'll start to notice it when I attach some bigger lenses.

Re: Getting used to the Nikon

Number 2 is very odd indeed - there is a very obvious halo effect and the blue is a very odd hue. Is this straight out of the camera as a JPEG or processed RAW?

I do tend to struggle with Nikon because their DSLRs have controls laid out very differently to most others.

How are you getting on with the weight and bulk of a ful frame camera and lenses?
