        Re: Glastonbury

        Thanks both,
Ive driven from Cornwall to Birmingham for over 25years and never broke the journey to see what was off the M5, I must admit I had Stephen's blog comment in my mind as i was walking round the abbey snapping away.
Mind you theres a time for all types of photography be it happy snapper or dedicated amateur, But Stephen I did put more thought into what I was trying to capture (albeit without great success). All those fellow tourists trying to photograph their partners in front of the ruins so I spent a pleaseant afternoon walking round in the sunshine with a wry smile on my face

It would be very interesting to find out the background story on the loaves! Was this ye olde Easter celebratory bread? Maybe the forerunner to our Hot Cross Buns!

              Hi Jocelyn, Stephen,
The table was located in the abby kitchens, the only part that Henry VIII decided not to trash! and is part of a demonstration of the monks life. As you can see there was only natural light in the area which made trying to get anything quite difficult, also there were restrictions with positions to shoot from which means the perspective of the table is not ideal.
The contrast in light and shade is a super challange which beat me somewhat as the highlights are blown an at the moment I am struggling to recover them in PP.
Jocelyn, I must say they made good bread then as these loaves appear to have been there since 1539.............and no mould

I think anyone would struggle with such highlights. Its going to be pretty impossible do it with a single exposure. You could try exposing for the highlights then lifting the shadow area after, but I suspect then you would get a fair degree of noise in the shadow area. The only reasonable thing to do is take several exposures and try to blend them together. The trouble is they probably have restrictions on the use of a tripod too

It's very challenging, but certainly if the highlights (bright areas) are part of the main area of interest, then definitely moderate the exposure to prevent the highlights from being blow and then bring up the shadows. As Stephen says, noise is a risk, but I feel it's better to have noise in the dark areas and then deal with that later (noise suppression may lose detail, but there is relatively little detail in shadows to start with) than to have burned out bright areas.
