Visited an old derelict factory building yesterday, looking for some inspiration in what has been a very lean time recently for me in terms of creative photography. There was lots of graffiti around and I've tried to give some of the shots a more edgy feel in the processing. Feel free to offer any comments

Hi Stephen
I never know what to think about graffiti, is it someone else's art when photographing it and seeing the results? not sure.
Anyway, yes you have given edge to the images.
The first I like the composition with the foreground interest of the old phone. I feel the second image to be the best of three, the traffic cone though I find a distraction. It still needs some work to really get that feeling of depth.
The third I would have preferred the old tin box to have been less central.
Some close up shots could work here I feel that would make some interesting abstract images.
I know someone that would be interested in the location as they are doing a project on graffiti for their FRPS.
I have a love-hate relationship with derelict buildings such as this! They're great to photograph, and I love looking at other people's images, but when I'm actually exploring them myself, I feel worried all the time, not sure why. Possibly because being a lone female in a spooky disused building isn't the most sensible thing I could do!
The second of the three is my favourite. I like the way that the whole picture is sharp. It seems to have more depth of field than the other two? I also like the way that the eye is drawn to the colourful graffiti, whereas the rest of the shot has a low colour saturation.
Have you come across the images of photographer Andre Govia? His pictures of derelict buildings have a very distinctive, low saturation style to them. I actually prefer the lighting in yours though, Stephen, as your images above are 'gloomy' enough to give a feeling of desolation, but not so dark that the details are difficult to see.

Thanks Patrick, the old phone is actually a half melted plastic helmet and a shower rose I rarely touch anything in these sort of places, so things are exactly how they were. I take your point also about the plastic emulsion paint bucket, though I wanted the graffiti in the b'ground to fill the frame square on to the camera.
If you want to pass on the location to your friend the google maps location is HERE However, be warned, it is not exactly a health & safety sort of place, and he should wear a hard hat and be concious of asbestos roofing lying around
I like the tone you have achieved with these, Stephen. It's gritty but has a freshness about it which I like very much.
Ian
Thanks Ian, the original images just didn't cut it for me, and needed this gritty edgy feel put into them. There are an infinite number of effects you can achieve with Lightroom. This was simply a preset I knew would give me what I wanted with the odd tweak.
First of all these are not in the critique forum, but people have made comments. Secondly, dereliction and grafitti don't really do it for me and however good the photos are, I find it hard to critique them.
Thirdly, I am going to pass comment.
No 1 - I find the cream helmet too much "In my face" and think that had you moved to the left a couple of feet it would be better placed for me. Also top left is a shade too dark. As the photos are entitled Graffiti Alley, I think the graffiti in the background should be more in focus - it is too bokehed? (Is there such a word?) I can see you have made the helmet the point of focus.
No 2 - I like the angle from which you have taken the photograph, but somehow I get the feeling that the walls are leaning backwards and could probably be adjusted in Photoshop, Filter, Lens Correction. But hey, perhaps they were like that. Yes, I would definitely have moved the cone.
No 3 - I like this, but feel the bucket is an intrusion, but if you took it away, the image would be bland, so perhaps it is better to keep it. Pity it's not a bit smaller, but we can't have everything.
Overall, a nice set of images. I may be tempted to post some of my dereliction type images sometime and for goodness sake it's about time we had something to talk about.
Must be quite an experience wondering around a place like that. It looks huge and by the debris on the floor the roof is doesn't seem all that stable.
Its the second one for me. The angle makes me want to know just how deep those lanes are. I appreciate your not wanting to touch anything but maybe you could have kicked that cone out of the way.

I actually like the cone there. I can't put my finger on why, but it just seems to 'fit' somehow.
I see someone else has made the "gritty" comment (late as usual, me!).
I really like this series of images but, like ryme, don't feel comfortable going into that sort of environment on my own.
Just to be different, my favourite is the first. I'd spotted that it was a partly melted helmet, but admit to having been baffled by the shower rose (an odd combination).
Going back to the gritty idea, you can almost feel it underfoot in this shot, and I also like the texture under the helmet.

Thanks Carol, of the 3 here I think the first is my favourite too, as for the combination of helmet and shower rose, they were just there, no idea why I'd agree about going there by myself, as it was I went with a friend. I find it hard motivating myself to shoots by myself, but with someone else its much easier.
