Aaaaaaaah. Her eyes suggest Santa brought exactly what she wanted.

      Priceless memories indeed.

Enjoy every minute because they grow up so quickly you end up wondering where the time has gone.

Re: Fortnightly Salon Competition No 32 - What Christmas Means to Me

Thank you to everyone who took the time to enter this competition, I've really enjoyed looking at he various interpretations of the theme. But now the bit I'm dreading, making a decision.

I used to think I was indecisive, but now I'm not so sure....

O.K., here goes, the winner is Life in a lens.

I agonised over this one. It fits the theme I set perfectly, but was I being unduly influenced by the sentiment, which is powerful and compelling, rather than the photographic merit which, after all, is the real purpose of this Salon?
Then I looked again, in a dispassionate and analytical frame of mind.

It's a first class portrait by any standard. It captures the spirit of the subject, a man who is clearly unwell but determined not to be beaten, determined to enjoy himself. There's a sparkle in his eyes that reveals his sense of fun, and from a photographic point of view the catchlights are just right, enhancing this perfectly. The choice of background is perfect too, defocussed and dimly lit enough to become unobtrusive, with a nice dark colour that allows that Santa hat to shout out, "It's Christmas!"

A very close second is Autumn's light, airy, hi-key picture of Meadowhall. I particularly like the bold use of the hanging red berries that dominate the foreground. The composition is meticulous, perfectly symmetrical and maintaining the integrity of the verticals - not a trace of convergence. The whole atmosphere is so gay (in its proper context), bright and positive that it really does convey the meaning, at least the modern meaning, of Christmas. A very nice photograph, Audrey, which came very close to winning.

Other entries that I particularly like came from ekkl, Pewidane and Pol, although I enjoyed looking at them all. A special mention for originality should go to Kurt's Duck Shoot - it does look cold out there!

A photograph is more than a record of what you see - it's a window to your soul

...thank you. Thank you very much. I'm sorry I made it so hard with my comment but I that picture means so much to me I couldn't not explain.

I already sent an email to my Dad, Aunt DeeDee, and Grandma to let them know. They'll be happy to know.
