I could ask you the same thing. I do think that it is quite a co-incidence that there are only about half a dozen contributors to this challenge and that we both choose the same set of stairs from such a remote location.

... ... went on a cruise from Barcelone to Cape Town, calling at two or three Canary Islands plus Madeira, Cape Verde (before it was popular and now homogenized). It was so raw then and I got some lovely street pics but since, nada; St Helena, (at that time, 2002 they only had about 2 cruise ships a year); Namibia and Cape Town and flew home.

I've lots of photos of St Helena. Very Enjoyable.

Now what were you doing and when were you there?

          Re: Challenge 180 - Stairs

Nice! I was there in '85 on a BP tanker refuelling ships going down to the Falklands. We were actually based at Ascension Island but the Governor of St Helena's daughter was coming back for Easter break so she was flown to Ascension, we took her down, waited 5 days and took her back to Ascension. We were looked after royally for the time we were there, bearing in mind the typical BP tanker at the time had a crew of about 30, they had banquets for us up at the Governor's house, discos in the town hall, you name it they did it for us. I see recent photos that have the stairs re-concreted and uniform size. When I was there every stair was a different height! Not bad for 699 steps! Loved the place, not least because so few people have ever managed to go there. On Ascension it was all Saints working (as it was a little less so in the Falklands) and in all my years it really would be difficult to find a more genial people. Agree regarding Cape Verde as well. Was a lovely place 30 years ago.

How interesting. A friend of ours (Sandy) was in the Merchant Navy as a meteorologist and was stationed there for about 2 years, I think. When he knew that we were going he gave us his number to pass on to a Tubby Thomas whom he had known years ago. (He said everyone knew everyone else in St Helena). We were only there one day, but our taxi driver knew him and took us to his shop (see picture). Unfortunately, he had gone to Capetown for some medical treatment, but his son took the message and passed it on to his father on his return. Our friend subsequently heard from Tubby and met him with his wife in England. I was happy to have been instrumental in the reunion. Sadly, I believe he has since died.

Sandy also tells us of the magnificent entertainment that took place in the Governor's Residence.

Click on the Flickr link below. I have added some images of St Helena. I also found a better one of Jacob's Ladder.

It's better to go to albums and click on St Helena as the images in the Photostream are in reverse order (for some unknown reason).

Sorry folks for going off topic here.

                Re: Challenge 180 - Stairs

Firstly I must apologise for being a bit slow in making a decision but with my heavy involvement in two local campaigns, standing for Parish Council, several committees, hospital visits, family duties and last but not least my seventieth birthday celebrations, I haven't been able to give the time that this competition deserves, However I have spent some time on it this afternoon so have been able to come to a conclusion. Remember I said I was looking for something different - angle, lighting etc., but the winning image needs to be one that I would be happy to see on my sitting room wall.

So here goes, in reverse order:

#3 the 2nd image from Patmoore of the spiral stairs - I really liked this although I think a landscape orientation would have suited the subject better IMO (for my wall).

#2 the 1st image from Kurt of the shadow on the steps - a really interesting study which was almost my first choice.

#1 the 1st image from Horacio - with it's light tone, symmetry and perspective which draws the eye to the dark recesses beyond is something that I would be happy to view for a long time.

So well done Horacio, I've always admired your images and this one is a beauty! So over to you.
