  • DPNow Salon Competiton #134 - Exposure of Time

A little bit technical, but open to any interpretation you care to put on it, provided the exposure is 10 seconds or more...

I'll be looking for images that portray the passing of time rather than just movement.

    The Rules

    1. All photographs are to be uploaded to the photo gallery at http://dpnow.com/galleries/

They can be put in members own gallery if they wish. The resulting link generated for the photo will then be pasted into the next available space in the salon thread. Please keep photos to a maximum of 800 pixels wide so people can see the whole image without scrolling.

    2. One entry per user ID only please, which must be the personal work of the entrant.

    3. Entries should be "in line" within the thread (not as a links to an image held somewhere else).

    4. Comments on entries are welcome within the salon thread itself.

    5. After the close, the curator will indicate a winner and a couple of runners up.

    6. The curators decision is final.

    7. The winner will be invited to choose the next theme and curate the next salon.

    8. If the winner is unable to curate the next salon the current curator may offer that "honour" to any willing volunteer, possibly the entrant in second or third place.

    9. These rules are to be copied and pasted with the new theme by the curator at the top of the new salon thread with a finish date and time.

    10. As with all photos posted on DPNow, copyright remains with the photographer and DPNow will not use them without permission.

The salon will run to Midnight (GMT), Sunday 9th December 2012

    Have fun!
    Graham

You did say "open to interpretation"

I created two time exposures and incorporated them into very short videos. The tough choice was which one to post. I'll go with snowfall. A year ago Connecticut was hit with a massive snowstorm that knocked out power to much of the state for a week. I set up a camera on a tripod and took shots every few minutes and then assembled them into this video. The other video I was contemplating posting was a time exposure of me drawing an eye.

I did and I'll consider this a valid interpretation provided the combined exposure of all the images in the 3.36 seconds of video is greater than 10 seconds

Re: DPNow Salon Competiton #134 - Exposure of Time

My entry needs to be disqualified!

I went back to the movie file and discovered that I used 26 images each taken at an exposure of 1/50 of a second so that the total exposure was only .52 seconds. I suspect my time lapse video of my drawing in no longer.

          Back to the drawing board......

            That's a pity.

I see timelapse as a completely valid format for this competition in the same way as I would multiple exposures to produce star trails, etc..

Hopefully your "drawing board" will be put to good use.

            Thanks

Re: DPNow Salon Competiton #134 - Exposure of Time

I dug out a different type of time exposure that I created a couple of years ago. The system wouldn't let me upload it to the gallery as it's an animated gif. I had created it for a fellow snowboard racer so she could use it as her avatar, hence the small size. I uploaded it through tinypic.com. Here again, the entry should probably be disqualified. The total run took over thirty seconds but each of the segments was shot at 1/2000 of a second. I figured I'd share it with you anyhow and go back to trying to come up with something that does meet the entry criteria.

All this talk and no valid entries yet.

All good fun and we are seeing some wonderful photography.

                        Bit obvious maybe...

Think there's around 3600 seconds there...

I like this image because reminded me of the one I was going to take, but can't.

I retrieved my old stopwatch (from when I was dictatiting for shorthand). I thought I would show it at 10 seconds to midnight, set my camera to manual and 10second shutter speed but the aperture only goes to f11 on my Fuji HS10 and everything is burnt out. I tried it in the dark and of course can't see a thing. I thought it would look quite good showing the second hand moving slowly over the 10 second take, but it does not work.

Can anyone tell me how I could produce such a shot? Would I need to use a filter?

Bit of a cheek Ged, calling it a SIMPLE shot!

All I can suggest is trying it at different ambient light levels, eg a small table lamp or even candlelight. I'm presuming you've got the ISO down as far as it will go.

                              Her is my interpretation.

                              15 seconds in the night
