Hi Jojo

A good and free program is EZ Thumbs, you can set the height and width of an image and also the quality plus you can see the file size it via the following link http://www.fookes.com/ezthumbs/index.php?2.8

or use your image program such as photoshop use Save for Web then choose the sizes and quality click apply and you get a preview of the image before you save it.

Fortnightly Salon Competition (No.9) - 24 HOURS LEFT!

Late as ever - didn't get back from taking this till after 6, and had the devil of a job uploading the album of today's pics!

Ah well, here's my entry:

It's part of Chesterton Windmill, built to a design by Inigo Jones and a Heritage Site. You have to trek across a very muddy field to reach it from the layby, although the farmer has helpfully left a track so you're not damaging his crops (winter wheat, I think - I did tiptoe across some of it to take a full shot!)

I was going to post the wide angle shot, but realised it had a large plaque at the top showing the date!

And The Winner Is...

This salon I was given a rare opportunity to curate, so I figured it would be fun to raise the bar a little and make the whole contest more challenging. In deciding on the winner and runners-up, I have therefore looked at those shots which have immediately struck me in terms of overall quality, originality and of course how people have chosen to interpret the brief itself.

There are several images which to me deserve praise. All the following are worthy images and therefore I have chosen not to place them in order, but instead to list my favourites and then simply announce the winner. I'd also like to thank everyone who has taken part.

Okay, here we go...

Autumn's shot of the bibles. Imaginatively composed and with the left page opened to reveal a register of deaths circa the mid-1800s, interesting too.

Ian's dual posting of the picture of his mother, aged four, posing in her pedal car back home in the Philippines. While the shot itself clearly wasn't taken during the salon fortnight, a restored version was posted alongside the original and it immediately caught my attention. Beautiful.

Andrew Thatcher's cobbler's shop window. Nice "olde worlde" feel to the scene, with lots of cobbler-related interest in the window itself. The stroke of genius however, was the reflection in the window of the street cobbles.

Stephen's marriage certificate / 25th anniversary shot. Some real lateral thinking here, technically spot-on and cleverly composed, and a really clever interpretation of the brief.

Rogleale's stone menhirs. Beautifully composed shot of a simple diagonal row of ancient menhirs, set in a simple rustic landscape with a dramatic sky in the background.

Tom's bird/man. Well-observed shot of criss-crossing footprints in the snow, made by both birds and humans. Simple, but clever.

And so to the winner...

...Rogleale's stone menhirs. For me this shot came the closest to the original brief and it possessed a certain feel and mood which made it easy for me to choose it as the winning shot. So congratulations to Rog - you have won the 2GB Kingston media card (you choose the format) and you now get to curate the next salon.

Please copy the rules and start a new thread, laying out the theme (along with any criteria you may with to include). Also make it clear when the salon begins and ends (they last two weeks from when you start the thread usually).

Well done to all the runners up and especially to Rog for his winning shot - it was a toughie.

I won't be around for three weeks as we are off to Ecuador tomorrow. We shall be poking our noses into the Amazon and the Galapagos as well (life can be real tough at times!) Hope to be able to bring back some great shots. Good luck with the next Salon.
