  • DPNOW Salon Competiton #124 - A very British Celebration

Big thanks to Pat Moore for picking my entry as the winner for salon 123 'Mirror Images' and congrats to Ekkl and John Perriment as runners up.

The festivities are already under way for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee so this is going to be easy. I will be looking for the image that best captures 'A very British celebration' so come on, get out there and don't forget your camera. I am not looking for the technically perfect, just get out there and join in the fun. Good luck everyone.

This Salon will end at Midnight on 17th June, 2012.

    The rules, as usual:

    1. All photographs are to be uploaded to the photo gallery at http://dpnow.com/galleries/
They can be put in members own gallery if they wish. The resulting link generated for the photo will then be pasted into the next available space in the salon tread. Please keep photos to a maximum of 800 pixel wide so people can see the whole image without scrolling.

    2. One entry per user ID only please, which must be the personal work of the entrant.

    3. Entries should be "in line" within the thread (not as a links to an image held somewhere else).

    4. Comments only on entries are welcome within the salon thread itself.

    5. After the close the curator will indicate a winner and a couple of runners up.

    6. The curators decision is final.

    7. Winners should be offered first refusal to choose the next theme and curate the next salon.

    8. If the winner is unable to curate the next salon the current curator may offer that "honour" to any willing volunteer, possibly the entrant in second or third place.

    9. These rules are to be copied and pasted with the new theme by the curator at the top of the new salon thread with a finish date and time.

    10. As with all photos posted on DPNow, copyright remains with the photographer and DPNow will not use them without permission.

Well to say I'm disappointed with the interest in the competition is an understatement. I really thought there would be even just a few entries as we have just celebrated the Diamond Jubilee.

Kurt, thank you for entering the salon - where was this taken?

True, a disappointment when you have thought up a good and topical theme. This is on Brighton beach, the subject was one of a group who were partying on the Beach. The party, I understand, had begun the night before!

Well, I was working throughout the entire weekend and bank holidays and only got out for an hour to go into town so took the camera. Alas, nothing going on in town at all despite the promise of a few street parties around here. Couldn't capture anything remotely celebratory at all, other than a police horse with a union jack thing on its head and an eccentric man who had nothing to do with the jubilee!!

There is still a few days left for people to get some late entries in!

Not much British happening in NIgeria either. Sorry-o. It is a shame though!!
Just because cliches are cliches does not make them wrong. I do like walking in the rain.

I think perhaps your Salon theme clashed with Ian's Jubilee thread, which he'd started just before you initiated the new Salon.

See Ian's thread HERE - where there are lots of Jubilee w/e pictures.

"I will get my thinking cap on for the next Salon but it's a bit of a no brainer as it's Jubilee weekend"

When I read that I thought you meant you would not be announcing it until after the Jubilee weekend and so I didn't see your announcement until AFTER the weekend.

However, it never stopped raining here over the weekend, so I wouldn't have got chance to take anything anyway.

                Sorry Gina.

I'd love to have participated but was stuck on the wrong side of the pond. We certainly watched the festivities on TV.

I took a photo of three people on the side of the street in Greenwich on my last trip to London that I was tempted to submit but it would have been a "tongue in cheek" entry. They didn't look like they were celebrating anything!

Unfortunately this topic will have a very local appeal, and will leave many of us international photographers out of the loop.

As I mentioned before I was tempted to submit this shot of watchers of the festivities. It was taken in London but unfortunately it was two years ago - the last time I was over there. In any event here it is. Clearly it isn't eligible for the competition but I wanted to share it anyhow.

Sorry but this is the only photo I have from the Jubilee weekend, a grab shot from the pocket Panny. Having said that, it's certainly 'Very British' in that it was chucking it down with rain, yet again.

We were passing through Rotherfield village (East Sussex) on the way to the supermarket and already quite wet but the real deluge came just as left the shop to go back to the car. We got soaked to the skin ... yet again.

Sounds exactly like a British celebration, well an English one anyhow.

Hi Pol, I know that place well, I live not too nfar from it and often ride through there on my motorbike, some nice roads around there!

Anyhow, here is mine to make up the numbers! A typical Bank Holiday scene quite common in Brighton, police everywhere! On the Monday (Jubilee day) when this was taken, there was meant to be a big family street party in the centre of Brighton. Unfortunately the EDL planned a march right past where it was happening so sadly it didn't go ahead, neither did the EDL protest but there were plenty of police about. Note the Union Jack thing on the forehead of the horse!
