  • Digital Darkroom Suggestion ??

Hi there, How about having a Thread with a Before and After pick, with some details on what was done, and how it was achieved ?

This would help a Beginner like myself, to see what difference the "digital Darkroom" really can have ?

Whats your take on this ?

This could include stuff like changing to b/w or just contrast, balance..

    Thanks
    Lou

We do have something similar already running. Ian started a PhotoFix competition but for some reason it seems to have died a death. First one run OK but second one has faded into the Mist. Have a look on the front page for details, it may be just what you are asking for.

Cool, However I mean not as a competition, but more like the Photo Critique,
Just where you post before, and after ?

But you are here longer, and Know what worked, and what not..

      Thanks for the Reply

I do see what you mean by it being for educational purposes and would agree that is worth trying. I'm all for sharing information on how to improve our images. There are a few who do post how it was done but like your self I too would like to see the original so that we can make comparisons. Hope Ian picks up on this thread and gets something going. You could also PM Ian and make your suggestion to him.

I like this idea - think its worth persuing - I am working a lot in PS elements during the cold winter months so am more productive in smartening up my old photos than in getting new photos at this time so could probably participate a lot on this kind of thing.
          cheers

OK then here we go. This first image is as it came out of the camera, just re-sized for web.

This one is cropped and the exposure and saturation adjusted. Also a little sharpness has been added.

Same image with a B&W conversion.

Did you do this in PS Lumix? If so I would suggest doing a white balance thing - I don't know the technical term for it but if you go into the levels adjustment thing in the layers palette you will find some eyedroppers - (if I had it on this computer at work I would do it to demonstrate) - intuitively I would choose the black one and then click on the darkest patch of tree you can find in the golf course - I think this would correct the color cast that clouds this part of the pic. I don't want to be too critical becuase I think your edit brings out the blue of the sea beautifully but it has blown the details out of the white of the waves.

No all done in a free prog. Picasa2. Can't afford PS I'm an Old Aged Perisher And as Stephen said that gives me artistic licence. Give it a posh name and you can get away with anything. BTW I agree the highlights are blown and the colour balance somewhat changed as the saturation was increased. Oh and that Stephen is really quite good at this photography lark.

Here is my contribution - not exactly an earth shattering picture but I thought it presented interesting editing options. Here is the original

oh no I don't agree that B&W works on this particular image - I think the colours are important conveying a sort of warmth that matched the gorgeous coffee aroma (I think you would agree if you smelt it )
