  • Working with the new Lightroom Beta3

I've been spending a bit of time working with the Beta3, and apart from the few functions that are greyed out, I'm liking it. Its obviously very similar in feel and looks to V2.5, and you may ask what's all the fuss about, but there are some subtle changes and new gadgets. I've been playing with the slideshow, and the way its treating music and export is much better. The Develop module has a new grain function which is interesting, esp for mono work. Here is a picture taken recently that I desaturated, added grain, then some split toning

I should also add that the Watermark facility is much improved on the old one which was next to useless as you had very little control. With the new version you can choose the font, size, and opacity as well as putting it anywhere you want on the image. Its in the Export dialogue and the drop down menu for watermarking.

I hope I can ditch my rather unreliable home-brew PS action for doing watermarks!

So long as you don't want any fancy embossed effects etc, I think you could

            Hi

I am an avid lightroom user. With the continued enhancements how long before we don't need ps elements anymore?

I'm pretty sure I'm not imagining it, but has anyone noticed that the large preview photos in the library model tend to look a bit soft, but then when you go to the Develop model, they kind of pop and look really nice and sharp. I'm sure this wasn't the case in LR2.5

I have tried developing DNG, ORF and RW2 files in LR2.5 and LR3 but didn't see any significant differences, if anything slightly more improvement with the ORF than the other two. Have you noticed much difference?

Adobe made a change to the bayer filter processing in LR2.5, so maybe the difference between 2.5 and 3 is not that great fundamentally from a colour point of view.

However, LR3 does have enhanced colour noise and sharpening processes. Luminance noise is disabled in the LR3 beta, so maybe we can expect an improved Luminance noise process later too.

Were you expecting to see some significant difference? I'm guessing this Beta version is using the same version of ACR so I don't think I would expect to see any difference. If I'm honest I've always been very happy with the results of processing DNG, ORFs and CR2 files in LR, though I have to admit I have not compared the results from processing ORFs in Olympus Studio.

It seems I am right. In previous versions of LR you had to be zoomed in to see the effects of any sharpening. Now you don't and you can see the effect of any sharpening when zoomed out in the Develop module. A pretty minor thing you might say, but IMO this is a major improvement

The revised watermark system has potential, but it seems a bit silly that you can't edit a watermark and save it, you need to save any edits to a new watermark ID. Also, you can't preview it as far as I can see; you need to export an image to see it.

I'm not sure what you mean Ian. The photo with the watermark is in the edit window so you can see what it looks like. Am I missing something? BTW you can also access the watermarking edit window from the filemenu

                            Ian,
I downloaded LR3 a couple of days ago and as you say the Luminance noise was disabled but today I reloaded LR3 and now the Luminance noise is enabled.

How did you get the Luminance noise option to work? Mine is still disabled and checking for updates revealed nothing.
