  • Organising your photos in LR

For all you Lightroom lovers like me, there is a great new video tutorial from Matt Klowskowski on his site Lightroom Killer tips

I happen to organise my folders in the same way as Matt suggests, however as he points out there are lots of other ways to search for your photos, I'd encourage you to have a look

I tend not to worry too much how the actual folders are organised; the main thing is to key word all the images and then organise via key word.

Pretty much as I do it myself, but I always pick up something on Matt's videos. This time it was the column headings; I hadn't realised that they all had the same options so that I could order the columns as I want.

Somehow, I keep losing my keywords though, but that's another story!

I'd certainly accept that using keywords can be more important depending on your needs. I use key words, though not in a detailed way, there is no need, but it seems unwise not to use at least one or two for a folder of shots.

However I have heard several members on this forum state that they organise their files in date order. Matt Klowskowski's point in his video is that there is little point in doing this in Lightroom, as it does this automatically anyway.

I sometimes use the original folder name, moving it and its contents to a folder that I have named in a sensible way, like:

          Test_images > DXO > Canon

          ..for example.

But in general I use the save by date option, where LR does it for you.

I have chosen to rely on key words and it works for me, but you do need to be committed. It's a long project to import my archive and keyword it all. You don't need to key word every single image separately, but I do where the subject requires.
