  • Getting into LR 2

    Hi All,

Not a special pano, but the first one I've done using the 'Synchronise' command in Lightroom to apply corrections made on one picture to seven others. It seemed to work quite well on the whole.
If you do use the 'Edit in Photoshop > Merge to panorama' command it is advisable to reset your LR preferences in 'External Editing' to a bit depth of 8 bits before you start. The 16 bit merge is very slow and produces files of over 500mb
In LR2 the tiffs, and merged panos are not loaded back beside the original frames, but into smart collections, I found them in collections called 'Recently modified' and Past Month'. That makes it very easy to find them for further work or printing.

    I love LR 2.

Thats a good tip about the reducing to 8bit Rog. I was using the Merge to HDR function of LR2 today and it worked a treat. I happen to prefer Photomatix however for HDR work which is a shame The Photoshop integration is a vast improvement though. For me though the Adjustment Brush is the Killer improvement so far

      Hi
My experiments so far are proving less than successful.

The program is running rather slow on my PC, which may be why the new brush isn't working well for me, its slow to react so I am tending to overcook it.
Why it should run slow beats me, CS3 fly's.

      Anyone else having this problem.

The brush can be a little jerky for me at times, but I've found it best to only apply one adjustment ie. Exposure, at a time. However if you check the Automask box, keep the adjustments on zero then check the mask by putting the pointer over the little circle that appears to see how you are doing, then move the slider to a plus or negative point the adjustment is applied.

Just a thought Patrick, how much Ram do you have. I found LR better after I put 4GB in my Mac

          Hi Stephen

4 GB same as you. I think I may have been a bit impatient with it, since posting I have had a little more success. The new tools have wonderful potential but after learning to control them better and make them work for us. Loosing the jerkiness would be a big help.

          Getting there though.

There is a great little mini tutorial HERE Patrick. Just click on the Adjustment Brush link on the right of the video window

                Re: Getting into LR 2

I think LR2 is running slower than 1.4 on my PC. I think it may be the background tasks which run. I found this with LR1.4 it runs faster aftera while. Also eats memory.
The older I get the better I used to be!

                  Hi Glyn,
Don't know if it will ease your speed problem but there are a couple of thing to try mentioned on the Adobe forum.

Optimise your catalogue, and dump all your previews. (Just delete the folder) There is a suggestion that LR2 can have problems with previews from 1.4.

                  Roger.

ps. I refuse to spell catalogue the American way!

                    This shot taken in the garden Sunday afternoon, using a Canon 40D, Sigma f2.8 70-200 with a 2x converter, exposure 1/80 @ f11 400ISO

                    A before & after.

                    Entirely processed in Lighroom 2.
Including removing the bright pink out of focus distraction. That new brush now I'm learning to use it, is, well, just fantastic.

The program is however jerky and slow, how and where do we delete the preview folder.

                      Re: Getting into LR 2

Not much consolation I know but quite a lot of users are complaining about the speed. It is slower than the beta was on my machine but I believe that Adobe are working on it.
                      To remove your previews:
                      C>Users>your-name>Pictures>Silvertone>LR 2 Catalog Previews.lrdata
You can either delete the folder or rename it, say oldLR 2 etc. If you rename it LR will rebuild the previews on restart, but it will still be there if you need it.
There are several other means to speed it up until the problem gets sorted:
                      1. In Catalog Settings Preferences - make sure that "Automatically write changes into xmp" is un-checked.
                      2. If browsing in Library mode close the Keywording and Histogram panels. The histogram particularly, will slow the browsing down.
                      3. When using the brush tool switching the auto mask off will ease the jerkiness a bit.
                      4. If you are not short of HD space going to 'Library>Previews>Render 1:1 previews' then going to bed, will greatly speed up your LR the next day, but if your catalog is very big you may find that it may need doing more than once. I think that LR gets tired and stops before it should!

                      I hope that helps,

                      Roger

                        Re: Getting into LR 2

I've really tried to like this software but have failed miserably to do so thus far.

I'm already using DxO, CS3, Picasa2, ZoomBrowser, PTGui and Photomatix and, from what I can see, LR should have the ability to replace some of these, either fully or partially. I'm just not getting something - it must be good and really useful because Stephen, Roger and Patrick think so...

v2 also runs quite slowly at times on my 2.4GHz Core 2 Quad CPU with 4GB RAM.

Thanks Roger your suggestions have certainly had an impact and helped reduce jerkiness.
However the brush tools great assets is its auto mask, seems a shame to be denied its use.
I have masses of disk space so will try your last suggestion tonight.

I have a strange situation, the program runs smoother on the laptop despite having half the RAM.

I can't understand Adobe, when beta LR1 was being evaluated most of the complaints were around speed, the program was nearly dead in the water as a result. They sorted it and the retail version was fine. History repeats itself only this time on the retail version of LR2, don't these people learn by their mistakes.
They are working on it fine, couldn't they have worked on it before releasing a flawed program that people are paying good money for, particularly here in the UK with our inflated price compared with the US.
I also find it odd they are charging 21%VAT despite the fact its 171/2% here in the UK.

The path above is the one for a Mac, maybe different on a PC.
I'm using an iMac 2.8Ghz Core 2 Duo and I don't think I've noticed a significant difference in the speed. I'd be interested to know what aspects of using the program anyone finds slow. At present my Library consists of over 32000 images, and as far as I can tell the only noticeable thing that is a little slower is when switching from Library to Develop modules

Its the tools I am having problems with both the Garaduated filter and the new brush. Improved by Rogers suggestions but still not as smooth as could be expected.
