I tend to do things a little differently to Jim, but only in the first stage of getting images off the card. Firstly every time I use the camera the resulting files are downloaded, so there is a logical title I give to the Folder created. This would be the name of the Job or Shoot. I always use a Cardreader and Import directly via Lightroom. The Import dialogue option would be "Copy photos to a new location and Import" The Location would be "My Documents" on on the Mac "Pictures" Then I would check "Put in Sub folder" and give the folder the name of the shoot. In the Informtion to Apply section of the Import dialogue, I would apply my Personal or Business Metadata which is saved as a Preset. This includes Copyright info which is embedded automatically in every image as its imported. At the same time I would put any relevant Keywords about the shoot tht can be applied to every file, I'm not anal about this, its only basic words, like the client, location, or anything else thats appropriate. My clicking Import a folder is created with the files in My Documents/Pictures with the name of the sub folder, and a virtual copy of this is made in the Lightroom Library.

If you are importing from an existing folder on your HD you need to select the Folder and "Choose" it and select Import photos at their current location. The folder name is then put in the LR Library

Now to me this seems all pretty simple and basic stuff that helps you keep organised. However the other parts of the Library Module are also very powerful and I have begun to realise how useful the Quick Develop section can be, but it would be easier if you were to check out this little video tutorial

At the moment the only thing about the Library module that bugs me at times is that you have to be in it to Export and therefore create your working files, that is of course unless you use the command in the File menu which can be accessed whilst in the Develop module

My Library is at present showing some 26000+ images. They are of course Virtual images + metadata and are linked to the original Raw files on my HD or to various external HD's. I don't find that the program is slow when working on photos, however on the occasion when it prompts you Backup the Library files or check the Integrity of the Library, this can slow things as you wait for the Program to load. I don't see this as a great issue though. There is also a slight delay sometimes when using files from an external HD as you wait for the drive to spin up and read the data. I'm pretty sure that would be common to other programs though.

      Hi Stephen,

A little late (just catching up after returning to the forum after a long absence) and I'm not sure if this was a change introduced in the 1.4 update but you can export from the Develop screen. Export is on the context (right click) menu, at least in the Windows version, not sure if the Mac has the same. This works on the main preview area and the Filmstrip (where it will export all of the images you have selected)

      Vernon.
