Having just looked at the LR5 "what's new" videos, they said something I'm unsure about:

They say that LR5 works better with RAW files "because of there being more metadata in the files".

If this is the case then what is being stripped/left out by the processors, either in camera or post processed

EXIF data is only part of the 'metadata' that files contain. As the complexity of cameras has evolved so has the need to include more information about the camera (and lens) settings and variables, including scene modes, art modes, distortion correction data, and so on. Most of this is proprietary and not visible when using EXIF or other standard metadata viewers/editors.

Ah yes! "distortion correction data" - That makes a lot of sense as one of the new features is perspective correction and you would likely not want LR to correct for something that was already corrected for in the image engine.

Of course nothing is corrected in a RAW file - but the tags need to be present to indicate what needs to be done to correct the image nominally.
