  • Auto Import

I've just discovered this really cool function of Lightroom, so much so that I thought it worth sharing.

It allows me to import photos into a designated folder on my Laptop. From here I have it programmed to put the files into my Dropbox This is all done in Lightroom by going to File > Auto Import and filling in the appropriate settings, in my case on my Laptop. The Dropbox automatically uploads them to my online account (free btw) and from there they are sent to my Dropbox on my desktop machine, where they are put into a designated Auto import folder, set up in LR on the desktop machine. As soon as Lightroom is loaded on my desktop machine the files appear automatically.

So in theory, I could be in Australia, I import a set of photos into my Auto import folder, where they also appear in LR on my laptop. The photos are then automatically put in my Dropbox folder on my laptop where they are sent to my online folder, and finally they are forwarded to my desktop machine back at home ready to be imported into LR as soon as its switched on, cool eh?

    Re: Auto Import

Sounds fantastic Stephen, but I still have not yet got my laptop and desktop talking to one another.

All these little things are hidden away, just waiting for someone to tick the box and make it work.

I can imagine a feature like the one you have discovered would be very useful to you.

Stephen's method - if I read it right - bypasses your local network completely. So you just need Web access for both computers; they don't need to be linked together at your home network.

That's correct Ian, so long as you have an internet connection it will work. The Dropbox prog really is a good little facility to have on your computer and being creative with it like with the Auto Import function in Lightroom, it comes into its own.

I don't know where the time goes to these days. I've still not investigated Dropbox, but I think I will put it on my Things To Do List, when we've finished decorating etc.
