  • DxO - support for Canon distance data comming soon...

...well, for the 3 bodies that support it. I know the 40D is one of them, I'll have to ask what the others are.

I had a response to one of my questions on DxO's forum today where one of DxO's forum administrators suggested that the next release, 5.3, will support automatic detection of focusing distance in the software rather than the Canon users having to key it in manually for each shot (a real pain). This should speed up processing in DxO no end - assuming you have one of the supported models of course.

I asked when 5.3 would be released and he replied "I don't know the release date but on a completely unrelated topic, photokina is coming up"

OK, it didn't come out at Photokina as expected (at least DxO told us it was delayed this time) but DxO 5.3 is out, seems stable and, at last, it can recognise the focusing distance for images was taken using the
Canon 40D, Canon 1D MkIII and Canon 1Ds MkIII. As a 40D user myself, this has removed a major gripe with the software.

DxO produces the best image quality from RAW that I've been able to realise so far and I've tried most of the competition. The downside has been software releases that weren't up to scratch and brought to market too early and infuriated users but this is not unique to DxO by any means and they do actually seem to be listening to issues raised on their forums - which is reassuring.

Now, if they could just bring out a 40D + 100-400mm module, then I'd be really happy.
