I really like the look of that. I could never justify the expense but it looks nicer and easier to use than the PS extraction tool.

On the other hand .... there's no point in being a wealthy pile of ash in the cemetery, eh.

I must disagree Stephen, there is a very obvious white halo around the trees in Ron's version and this is absent in Danny's.

Both examples aren't ideal as this kind of masking works best on high resolution originals. I'm sure that if Fluid Mask had been used with the original and then resized for the page here it would look very natural.

Danny, have you tried with an image with fine wisps of hair or animal fur and whiskers ... or maybe downy bird feathers?

The guy from Vertus did a demo that involved preserving find detail like hairs. The ability to fine tune the selection is where its power lies. And it mops up stray pixels extremely well. It both saves a lot of time and produces a superb result.

It may sound like Danny and me have some kind of vested interest in the product, but we don't. I use masking a lot to create bleached white backgrounds in my product photography and I can see this saving me many hours of work and producing better results at the same time.

I spent ages last night looking at the sample gallery on their website, the samples sent by people who were trying it out. I must say I was well impressed by some of their results.

I've always struggled with the PS extraction tool, don't really care for it ..... but this Vertus looks superb. I truly can't justify the expense. I'm just a hobbyist, sell nothing and have no ambition to do so ......... but I'm tempted to persuade myself a hobby is important too.

I mean - it could be a very long winter and I'm in no hurry for a K10D, Christmas is coming and ............

The most obvious alternative is Corel Knockout 2.0 - which we'd be duty-bound to compare Fluid Mask with in our review. I'm not familiar with the Corel solution but it must be worth a look and it is cheaper too.

PaintShop Pro has a neat extraction tool as well.

Well I was thinking it might just be a useful tool for cleaning up smoke. If I can manage to get a high quality swirl and spiral and can't get the standard of clean-up I want, I might be tempted to d/l and try out Vertus.

I prefer to stick with PS and plugins if at all possible but thanks for the info about Corel Knockout though. I'll have a look.

As I said, I used the demo copy because the licensed copy is at work, I just did it in a few minutes, you'll need to know that you are not allow to save the file after the mask is made, I've use screen capture to copy the file off the screen then use the magic wand to reselect, hence the quality, just wanted to verify and not do Vertus wrong justice.

Worth noting. I have just downloaded the demo for Vertus Fluid Mask and it runs OK as a plug-in in my software. Microsoft's Digital Image seems compatible with most Photoshop plug-ins. What more can I say, it just gets better the more I apply it to.
