For some reason unknown to me, the keyboard shortcut does not work on my PC. I resorted to a Photoshop manual last night and was trying custom shapes without much success either but am glad to say that your character map advice worked.

Glad you managed to get sorted.
As for the keyboard short cut problem -- be sure to keep the Alt key held down and use the numerical keypad for the 0169 (as opposed the numbers along the top of the qwerty keypad).
Mind you - I must admit I prefer the character map method myself. I'm not good at remembering keyboard shortcuts.
