I downloaded it today after seeing about it on the BBC site. Frankly I can't see what the fuss is about, so I remain to be convinced. Perhaps some of the Mac users can enlighten us.

Its supposed to be faster, yet even the Apple site took an age to show.

If I am right, it could have one big plus and that's because the Mac version supports colour management. So your photos should look exactly the same as they do in Photoshop. Many shots I post on the Web don't look as good as they should, mainly with muted colour being the problem. It will be interesting to see if the problem is solved with Safari. Apart from that, I've heard that Safaris pretty low on features compared to IE and FF.

If this is right Ian then it deserves closer attention. Infact have just noticed it renders the reply dialogue in DPNow differently

However, it doesn't go to the last post in a thread when you click on it

Just checked one of my photos in Safari and my regular browser. I can't see any difference

Trying it on Vista and XP. Nice smooth interface, but I have found no obvious speed differences. I do miss two things though:
The ability to resize the window by dragging the sides.
Centre click to open a link in a new tab.
It did import all my FF and IE favourites no problem.

But you can drag the bottom rt corner Roger, so I can't see a disadvantage there.

Re: Macs Safari Web Browser Now Available on Windows!

I use Safari on a Mac. I probably won't bother with the new version 3 until it's out of beta.
Generally find FireFox faster. IE is no longer available for Mac. I usually found IE to be fairly poor, but a lot of sites were optimised for it, even when it wasn't standards complient.

In Safari Tabs are a great feature. There is also private browsing which is good if you ever find yourself in an internet cafe. The way bookmarks are added and managed is nice.

On a Mac, you can right click to open a link in a new tab or window and as Stephen says you drag the corner to resize a window.

I think a lot of Windows users are more open to Apple software since they got iPods and used iTunes but I can't see Apple doing a Windows version of Aperture.

You're right Stephen, I missed that corner thing. For a beta it isn't bad though, but I have just found out that I can't visit my bank 'cos "Safari cannot open the https . . . ". That will have to be fixed.

You'll find a few sites that don't let you on if you're not using IE.

David - do you know anything about reports that Safari obeys colour management? I know a lot of DPNow posters experience desaturation effects when viewing their pix online via a browser - down to a compressed colour space.

Re: Macs Safari Web Browser Now Available on Windows!

This isn't something I've ever actually thought of…

As far as I know, Safari on Macs has always honoured embeded profiles – so if your photo is for example an sRGB that's how it will display it, if it's Adobe RGB 1998, it will display it that way.

If the photo doesn't have a colour profile embeded, Safari will display it according to the profile of your monitor.

It's funny that most of the Apple users I know slag off Safari (but not when Windows users are listening) and use FireFox!
