  • Help With Frames

    Hi there,

I see alot of you, are framing your pictures.

My question might be silly, but I have no clue.

Do you have a Set of Frames, or do you make one for a Specific Photo,

Is there a place where one can Download fames ?

I havn't played with framing of pictures, and I can see it makes a Big Difference in the outcome ?

Any Advice would be appreciated ?

    Thanks
    Lou

    Re: Help With Frames

    Hi Lou,
You can make frames yourself or you can get ready made frame or there are software plugins available for PS or PSP and other imaging software progs. you can download them from the net, just google "free plugins" or "free photoshop plugins" and you will find them, also try to google "image frames" There are frames given away on free magazine cover discs, magazines and books on digital imaging will show you how to make your own, you can borrow some good books from the local library. A very simple method to create a frame is to: go to select menu and select "ALL" this will select the whole canvas : Go to edit - stroke and stroke the selection choose white as your color make the stroke size 16 pixles, click OK this will stroke the selection in white giving you a solid white border, : now go back to edit stroke and choose black as your color, change the stroke size to 8 pixels click OK you now have a simple but effective border in black with an inner border in white, you can experiment with colors and sizes to find somethiong you like. this is a very simple method, and there are many more ways to try, useing layers and blend modes and layer styles etc:
    good luck and have fun.

      Re: Help With Frames

I find that most of the ready made frames are to gaudy, to wide or to fancy and distract from the image itself.
Far better to make up your own with whichever image editing prog you use.
Most have a 'Add Border' command which allows you control over colour and thickness. It is usually enough to go this route and experiment with thickness and colour.
Which image editor are you using?

Lou, I'm so glad you raised this. I have not had much success in Elements 5 or CS3 (no, I don't have money to burn, it's just that I was eligible to buy the Student Edition as I did the same Open University course as Julia).

            Thanks.
PS7 can do the job very easily and quickly for you. Here's just one quick and easy method.

            1) Open the picture and 'select all' ......next ........

            2) Go to edit >> stroke - then stroke the edge of the picture with about 1 pixel of black that's a simple way of 'containing' the picture within a defined edge.

            3) Next - go to edit >> canvas size .. and expand the canvas by approx 30-50 pixels on all 4 sides. You'll be given the choice of a white/black or coloured background. Try it with white.

The end result will have given you a 'contained' picture with a white frame. You can then finish off the edges by choosing 'select all' again then edit/stroke with maybe 2-3 pixels to give the picci a white border with a 2-3 pixel black edged border.

That's a very basic way of making a clean and simple frame/border. Once you get the hang of expanding the canvas you can do all sort of things with 'select all' and stroking the selection of marching ants.

Hope that helps with the basic principles enough to get you started.

              Re: Help With Frames

I've just been off to dig out some links.

Jay Arraich still has his very good tutorial sites for PS7 and Elements 3-4-5.

              The PS7 link is HERE

              The Elements link is HERE

Both links lead to some very clear, easily understood pages.

PS .... I think this thread might be more ideally placed in "software solutions - unless anyone objects?

                Re: Help With Frames

i actually do something very similar to pops, however, if you take the time on the first go, and set up an action, it saves a lot of time for the future!

Select a new folder in actions, call it 'simple frames' then select new action, call it 'stroke frame' and then start recording.

                I usuall do the following

                Stroke 15 pixels black
                Stroke 10 pixels white
                stroke 5 pixels black

this creates a very subtle black white black frame.

then you just add it to each new picture you create by a simple one click!

Another easy way is with canvas size.

Select image> canvas size> make sure the relative box is ticked>select the measurment you use Pixel, inches or cm. choose your colour black , white, background or forground these latter shades will tone with a colour within the image however you can use the picker to get any colour you want.
Click OK and the image has a frame, this way you can add as many as you want, just repeat again and again with new colours or sizes to achieve multiple framing.
