  • New magic from Adobe

    Hi All,
As a very happy user of Raw Shooter Premium for my raw processing, I was looking forward to doing all my processing in Adobe Lightroom in the future, because it would be free to me as an RSP user, and that would have meant that I would no longer need to update my Photoshop, which is currently CS2. Now Adobe have ruined that plan! They seem to be determined to confuse their users by putting most of the tools that photographers use into all the applications they issue, thus making the choice of which to use much more difficult. For instance - if Adobe slot a clone tool and some variety of healing tool into Lightroom Version 1, there would be very little need for a photographer to invest so many $$$ in Photoshop unless he/she also planned to do non-photo graphics work. Now there is CS3 in beta!!

I have been trying the Beta of CS3 and Bridge 2 for a couple of days and find them fantastic. I shall certainly be updating my Photoshop to CS3 when it arrives. Camera raw has now got all the tools that RSP users said it should have eg: vibrance adjustment, fill light, HSL adjustments and grayscale conversion. The real wow change in ACR now however is that tiffs and jpegs can be opened and edited in it. Bridge now has an upload tool from cameras or cards, filters to show raws, jpegs, in portrait or landscape orientation, and an LCD type display showing the camera settings used.
As for CS3, even better. a new quick selection tool, which is kind of like the magic wand on steroids, an improved clone tool, eight pre-selectable workspaces for different projects, the facility to auto hide pallettes, a new and improved photomerge, and improved HDR tools.

There a few bugs still to be sorted out, but with the beta being on free download to CS
users there will be many thousands of testers sending in bug reports to the forums, and it is nice to see that some Adobe engineers post on the forums.

If you can - try it!

I'm still using PSCS and Apple Aperture. I will be updating to CS3 as I want to update Acrobat Pro/Illustrator/InDesign etc. so I'll be getting one of the Adobe Collections.

In the meantime, if you want to learn about the CS3 beta, Lynda.com have made a video tutorial available free at:

I'm experimenting with desktop capture recording too - my first effort is posted here:

Adobe Photoshop comes in a variety of versions and guises and is the most popular family of photo editing packages. Seeking help or happy to provide advice on Photoshop use? Then this is the place for you.

You don't half make it look good.
Nice smooth video's by the way

Hopefully the cost of CS2 will drop when the CS3 comes out.
I am running the trial of CS2 at the moment and having a fun time.

CS was a big step up from Photoshop 7, but CS2 was less of a step up from CS (apart from making ACR actually usable!).

But CS3 is a very large step forward from CS3 - I can already see that after just one day of using it.
