Anyone made a drop shadow border or basic border in lightroom3?
I can't find out how to do it, seems a bit strange it does not have the option, it does just about everything else bar brew the tea
Having to export to another program just to make a border seems daft!

Basic borders are easy. In print module in the Image Settings panel, select Stroke Border.

You can select width on the slider and pick the colour. In a print package you can select separate inner and outer borders.

No facility for drop shadows as far as I know. You have to edit the picture in another application.

I use Photoshop, not LR so I can't comment on the workings of LR. However - is it possible to make a drop shadow in the the way it used to be done in the early days of before the imnage editing software grew and grew adding new filters etc.

If so here's how it was originally done in those early day.

      1) Create a new file in the shape of the drop shadow you want (eg a full size 10x8 if it's a full picci drop shadow you want)

      2) Open your picture then place it over the top of the 'shadow' new file you just created.

      3) move the picture layer into position to get the effect you want ... ie the plain layer looking like a shadow.

You can also make 'shaped shadow' or even 'light' beams in a similar way. Just create the shape of the shadow or light beam (or whatever) then drop it into place in your image. Another example would be a 'spot' of light on a floor beneath a spotlight.

So there y'go, ash. Get creative using the 'old-fashioned' methods. Just somewhat more time consuming.

Unfortunately Lightroom does not work with layers so Pols method would not work. I suspect Ash wants to use borders and DS for web use so even using the Print Module as Capt Bill describes would not be any good. You could however export an image at the appropriate size directly into Photoshop or PSE and use a premade template to drop the image onto. I'm sure it would take only a matter of a few seconds. There are also some third party plugins that work with Lightroom to create loads of different borders, there may even be one that would do the drop shadow. I'll see if I can find one amongst mine.

Does the Adobe website have anything for LR which is comparable to the Photoshop Studio Exchange? I mean a place where people can share plugins, filters, actions etc.

Like the studio exchange HERE .. only this link is for Photoshop

Here ya go, I found this frame with a DS in OnOnes Photoframe plugin. Accessed directly from Lightroom, a duplicate is formed and exported into Photoshop/PSE, then Photoframe kicks in, you find the frame and apply it, then finally it returns the result directly into LR and stacks it with the original. The drawback is these are all preset frames and there are few with Drop shadows

                Ash.
Here's the link to Photoframe. I have it as part of the OnOne plugin suite 5 and as with all their software it is not particularly cheap. You have to decide if you will get enough use out of it to justify shelling out $160

                  Ash,

Have a look in lynda.com too. Lynda is a mainly subscribtion-only software training site but there are usually a few free video tutorials for most software programmes. Just look along the top drop-down windows to choose whatever software you're using.

I think THIS LINK should lead you to the LR training tutorials.
