  • Which is better?

I've been looking back at my trip to Thailand just over a year ago (can't believe it's that long ago!) and here is a character who was very cheerful and photogenic, the question is, which one is the better result?:

The first one for me Ian, though I am a little uneasy about the out of focus thumbs up. You obviously used a long lens with a fairly wide aperture. However somehow it seems to create rather more of a connection between the man and viewer. The second one is just a more ordinary portrait

The first is my preference too. Much more interaction that makes it more "personal"

If it were my image, I'd clone out that little bit of ear and hair that is showing behind his thumb as it forms a distraction, and give it a tighter crop.

this first impression of an image is IMPACT. there are second chances at that. definitely the first. the body language and the sparkle in the eyes pull you in.

Definitely the first one. I don't mind the slightly out of focus thumb either because it gives it the hand and arm a hint of movement - which adds even MORE life, action and sparkle to the picture. Super picci.

I'm sure a unanimous vote for #1 will be the outcome for this interesting portrait Ian and agreeably so!

                Hi Kenny,

My father (he's British) now lives there in semi retirement. His home town is Maha Sarakam, which is near Roi Et in North Eastern Thailand.

I'll dig out a few more images from the trip - thanks for your feedback

Not a lot between them, but I think I favour the second because of the thumb business in the first. The main problem with both, as far as I'm concerned, is the poor background; especially the white thingy, I think it is a car.
The man's great features deserved a better surround.
